12 oz bottle. Dark ebony with a small off-white head. Very faint nose, sour and licorice? Watery dark roast coffee with incidental carb. Lime peel with a little dry chocolate. This would make a decent quaffer with some sauerbraten.

So many of the Viking brews I have tried have been so mediocre at best. This was no differnt. Felt it was quite bland, and watered down almost. Pretty thin. Not much in the way of malt flavor, or hops, but a little sweet/sour. Weird.

12 ounce bottle. Shaker glass. Dark brown with a thin head. Aroma - malt and cherry. Taste was of lightly roasted malt and sour cherry. There we go with the sour theme again from Viking. Mouthfeel was thin with little carbonation.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear garnet-brown color. Light roasty malt aroma with a hint of chocolate and an occasional whiff of adhesive tape. Dry and roasty on the tongue with barely perceptible acidity. Tasted of watered down coffee, well done toast, and dried fruits. This isn’t a great beer, but the style, in my opinion, doesn’t really lend itself to wowing people. It’s not bad as far as schwarzbiers go.

7/31/2007: Viking Mørketid is a "German-Style Schwartz Beer" that is dark brown in color. It is clear and has a mild level of ultra-fine carbonation and a diminishing small tan head. Caramelized and roasted malts pair with a bit of chocolate and diacetyl to form a fairly inviting aroma. The flavor is sour and a all wrong though. It hits hard with a sour grape and burnt malt flavor and then softens to reveal a hint of chocolate and finally moves into a roasty and possibly burnt flavor with a sour aftertaste. I enjoy sour beers, but not when it is supposed to be a "German-Style Schwartz Beer"! The palate is thin and watery and undercarbonated. The aroma and flavor actually get worse as the beer warms. This is my first beer from Viking and unfortunately there isn’t too many good things that I can say about it. I hope the other three from Viking (i.e. J.S. Bock, Berserk, and Big Swede) that I have to try tonight are better...

12 oz bottle from buckybeer. Thanks Mark! Rating #27 for this beer...

12 ounce bottle from Blue Max in Burnsville, MN (June 2007) served a bit below cellar temperature from a Hair of the Dog glass. Near-opaque black with a smallish diminishing off-white head, no lacing....pretty pleasant roasty-chocolaty aroma, faint peaty qualities, somewhat undone by a bit of diacetyl butteriness....the body is smooth and a bit thin, light roasted grains at the forefront, a bit of chocolatiness, but towards the finish sour grapy-cherry notes creep in, not welcome and unfortunately strong enough to pretty well ruin the experience; sour milk is also evident, though it dies away in the aftertaste....low carbonation, lightly syrupy. Mmm, no, I don’t think so.

Perhaps my favorite Viking brew. Fizzy dark brown color. Roasted malt aroma with a smooth roasted malt body.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with Brigadier (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, and roast. Thinner and somewhat watered down tastes of caramel and roast. Had a light salty and sour finish.
