I always feel it a privilege to be among the first 10 raters of a beer. Here we have a product with a pinkish peach head and deep amber color. Caramel, grassy aroma with a touch of lime shaving cream. Flavor is like ice tea with elements of toffee and wheatgrass. Good chance (not sure but...) there might be added sugar. Extremely thin palate with microscopic bubbles. Malty, very abrupt finish, with a simple-syrup element that adds to my feeling there might be sugar added to the brew. Ok as a chaser beer but somewhat like the homebrew experiment a novice will rant and rave about as the greatest beer on earth.

Deep murky amber. Lightly grainy aroma, not much else. Lightly sticky wheat character, some dark german malt character as well. Hops muted and mellow. Not as flawed as many Viking beers I’ve had recently, but that doesn’t make it very exciting.

Solid brown body, slim layer of grayish head, quickly diminished. Nothing in the aroma...a plasticine feel I get from their brews sometimes (and from other amateur operations)....smells "dark" but speaks of no specific flavors. the taste? Jeez, to use a popular Midwestern epithet...cripes, what’s wrong with this? doesn’t taste like anything! Drinkable, but utterly uninspired...there’s wheat involved, and it’s dark, yes,...but it’s a hollow, lifeless thing...enters the palate with hints of nuts, cocoa...I’m reaching...man, the mouth is turning down, into a sour frown, and that’s not the way beer is supposed to work! Only six quarters down the drain for this bottle, but tastebuds disappointed, time wasted, mood depressed, opinion of Viking Brewing Company lowered...get it together, guys!

Sampled at the 3rd Annual "Between the Bluffs" Beer and Cheese Festival in La Crosse, WI. Appearance: Finally, a Viking brew with a semi-lasting head! Tan head. Bubbly. So-so lacing. Opaque brown/red color. Aroma: Roasted malt, wheat, a little weak. Flavor is roasted malt, dark fruits, whole kernel wheat, some sort of milk-like sugars. Grassyness. This sucker’s tasty. Palate is lactose sweetness, smooth moderate mouthfeel. Overall, this one’s off the beaten path of wheat beers (kinda artistic like New Glarus’ Black Wheat). Very original. A MUST try. So far, I’m wondering if I got a better part of the batch or a different batch than other people got. I thought this one is worthy...

Dark Brown with Creamy White Skin. Sweet Malt Aroma...Tastes like Wheat and Bad Malt..Something Isn’t Right in This One. Better Luck Next Brew.

Dark brown generic pour, no head. Honey caramel bocky aroma. Downhill from there: Butterscotchy liquid diacetyl flavor masks hops, malts--it masks everything but the bacteria-poop taste of butterscotch. I love butterscotch, and it worked well here (although the body was a bit thick and unwieldly), but I think I may have had a bad bottle--hard to imagine, since this is probably the first batch.

Murky brown color with no head. Sweet chocolate malt flavor. Well, it has the good banana and malt start of a dunkelweizen, but there’s a nasty chalk-like presence that is so very not right. It ruins it.
