andyhwcinc (33), Illinois, USA Sep 16, 2009 This small brewery can’t produce a decent light beer, but they kill it with their stouts and porters. This is a pure black, sweet smelling porter that’s a great mix of coffee, oatmeal, and milk. It’s not very thick, but then again its a porter. Would definitely purchase again. madvike (301), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Sep 2, 2009 Bottle - Black pour with a dark brown head that goes away quickly. Smells sour and milky, with a bit of smoke and chocolate. Taste is sweet, milky, and chocolately. Finishes with some ho-hum almost instant-tasting coffee and bitter roast. The bitterness feels a bit off. Body is just about right--not too thick, not too carbonated, and smooth. Pretty much like most Viking beers I’ve had. I feel like they’re just a step behind the big boys, whether in ingredients or balance. twindadplus2 (408), Wisconsin, USA Aug 2, 2009 Deep black with a thin tan head. Aroma is earthy grains and coffee with a woody sweetness. Flavor is roasted malt, dark coffee, a hint of sweet chocolate and a raw oatmeal finsh. Palate seemed a bit thin for the style but overall a very good beer. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 29, 2009 Bottle from WI. Decent oatmeal aroma along with some mild coffee notes. Black body with thin tan head. Flavor had a thinner body texture to it, along with oatmeal, dry coffee and some mild milk in the mix. Alright on the palate, decent beer. brewblackhole (1366), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Jun 24, 2009 Poured with massive foaming,90% of my glass is head,I’ve had trouble with other Viking beers like that, aroma was sweet and chocolately malted milk and roasted malt, carbonation was excessive, huge carboic bite could taste the chocolate and malty grain through all that, but in all not a pleasant experience. Will rerate if I get a better bottle Ungstrup (14724), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 13, 2009 Bottled. A pitch black beer with a tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, roasted malt, milk, and vanilla, as well as lighter notes of wood. The flavor is sweet malty combined with notes of roasted malt, coffee, and alcohol, leading to a bitter finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing. jebert (110), Watertown, Wisconsin, USA Apr 30, 2009 Pours a dark opaque brown-black, folds into glass like a rich cream, topped by a huge light brown head that mostly lasts. Aroma is a bewitching combination of coffee, chocolate, toffee and malt. Very creamy on the palate. Chocolate, toffee, coffee and molasses bombard the taste buds. Nicely balanced finish. Great beer! Pairs well with any red meat, especially off the grill. noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Feb 16, 2009 Updated: Mar 8, 2009Pours brown-black with almost no head. Dark chocolate aroma. Flavor combines the dark chocolate with some ashen, burnt elements. Didn’t work for me. Palate is smooth, but thin, especially for a dark beer.
