Light carbonation and medium bodied. Burnt chocolate nose. Burnt chocolate flavor but smooth, finish has some bitterness but not from hops. $1.59 for a 12oz bottle from Blue Max Liquor Burnsville, Mn. Looks like chimpscampee got a bad batch. chimpscampee (566), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 0.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Sep 11, 2006 2 sips and this was drain poor. Unbearable sourness. Horrible sour milk, manure barnyard stench. Wattery, bland, greasy meat. Worse beer I can ever recall. Maybe just bad quality control but I think it was just bad brew. I tried this brewer’s IPA and it was like a hoppless macro larger. Both beers have shiny wrap over the bottle cap-- Just lip stick on a pig. I love IPA and porter and would like to give a Wisconsin brewer a pass but this swill is cruel. notalush (2687), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 20, 2006 Very carbonated black pour, with a foamy tan head that fills half the glass, then disappears completely, leaving a beer that looks like a glass of cola - highly smokey aroma, with copious amounts of anise, molassas and cocoa - dry and smokey, with a foamy, somewhat thin mouthfeel - caramel sweetness far in the back - a slight lactic quality, with some sourness hanging around near the finish - a unique porter, but nothing special. kramer (2501), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 3, 2006 12 oz bottle, via footbalm. Pours a very dark black colored body under a thin fizzy brown head that faded pretty quickly. Aroma is very roasty but there’s also a good amount of diacetyl as well. Notes of chocolate, lactose, and espresso. Flavor is roasty with burnt malts with a light sour mash note. Lesser notes of coffee, chocolate malts, lactose, and dark fruits. Mouthfeel is rather thin with a watery texture and fizzy prickly carbonation. Finishes slightly oily. This was certainly different. Not much resemblence to a Porter, but it was drinkabe. crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2006 Thanks Badgerben. Pours a dark black, pretty much no head, really low caronation and thin. Chocolate the dominant flavor, and of course you can taste everything else in there, coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, oatmeal, chocolate with sweetness. Good beer this could be an everyday drinker. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 21, 2006 Thanks to TannerTavern boys for sharing this porter. Pours very dark brown, almost black, with a brownish head. Aroma has cream, coffee, chocolate, milk and vanilla. Much lighter body than I expected compared to the big aroma. Burnt charred malt on the taste, but doesn’t have the depth of the aroma. There is also so dark chocolate note here and overall it is a very dry tate. There are some sharp hops on the finish. A nice beer. WisconsinBeer (530), St Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 20, 2006 Dark black, no detectable light coming through. Barely a whisp of carbonation provides for a very minimal head. Being the third Viking beer I have had in the last three days, I am definetely starting to pick up on the Viking profile. Maybe it is the water that they use? Anyway, I digress. Flavors of mild roasted malts, milk chocolate, lactose, and hints of coffee. Very smooth and fresh tasting. Easy to drink, a breakfast beer indeed. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | May 15, 2006 12 oz bottle courtesy of The_Enemy. This beer pours to a deep brown to black color with a slight tan head that fades, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is fantastic with aromas of bitter sweet chocolate, coffee, and mild roast. The palate is soft with lots of good flavors of dark chocolate, sweet malt, coffee, and mild roast. Palate is lean, but smooth and creamy, making it so drinkable. This beer finishes with more really great chocolate and sweet malt flavors up front, then ends with some flavors of coffee, and more dark chocolate flavor. This beer was so delicious and drinkable. The chocolate aromas and flavors of these beer are really impressive, and makes Whole Stein a great beer to match with deserts, or the perfect beer to have after a meal. They suggest breakfast beer, and I think this beer would be a great beer to match with some donuts. I would love to drink this beer any time of the day.
