mmhnto (29), Lisle, Illinois, USA Apr 14, 2006 Older bottle brought back from a trip to the Bier Koning in Amsterdam about 3 years ago. This beer gushed after opening and had to leave quite a bit in the bottle while pouring to avoid the serious amounts of sediment. The aroma is prototypically Belgian with notes of plum and high alcohol. Tastes quite malty. Hops must be present, but are very hard to detect in aroma or flavor in this aged sample.

ChainGangGuy (1511), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Mar 23, 2008 Appearance: Pours an opaque, wooden brown body with a fizzy, full off-white head.
Smell: Aroma of a heaping bowl of sugar, pureed fruits, and yeast with a hint of leather.
Taste: Malts and pervasive prune fruitiness go down with a scoop each of white table sugar and light brown sugar. Strong yeastiness throughout. Dash (or three) of cognac. Touch of acidity as near the drying finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Very well carbonated. Decidedly warming.
Drinkability: Can be a bit coarse with it’s rough sweetness and boorish booziness, but I still managed to find some pleasure in drinking it. BCMike22 (79), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Mar 22, 2008 Thanks to the ATL get together for this one.
Poured into small snifter. Light brown, foam still present. Smelled of caramel, very sweet. Attacks the tip of the tongue. Very full tasting with dark malt flavor. Instantly warming on the way down. I’d imagine this is perfect in the winter. CaptainCougar (4624), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 22, 2008 Bottle thanks to jbrus via kramer17801: Bottle was excited to be opened and slowly erupted. Pours a cloudy dark golden bronze with a large, fully-lacing frothy light tan head. Aroma of sweet bready dark caramel malts and a touch of doughy yeast and light fruity complexity. Body starts lively on the tongue, actually it practically explodes in the mouth. Lots of residual sugars for this bottle-conditioned yeast to eat. Sweet caramel flavors and light fruity esters come through once the beer settles. Finishes drier and bready. A nice tripel or Belgian strong, not really a barleywine, but who cares about style guidelines anyway? shp555 (1375), lilburn, Georgia, USA Mar 22, 2008 Pours a hazy copper color with an off white head. This beer was very happy to get out of the bottle. Aroma is caramel, red apple, and some earthy hops. Flavor is malty, red apple, some toasted malt, and a sweet alcoholic finish.
