Commercial Description:
Bottle, Pasteurised, Seasonal - Winter. First brewed by Wadworth in November 2004.
Bottle. Filtered. Released by Wadworth in August 2005.
Previously/Also known as Usher's Bishop's Tipple at 5.5%. Moved back to original ABV and recipe.
“The Bishop’s Tipple has been a legend amongst ale drinkers since it was first brewed in 1973 to celebrate the inauguration of George Reindorp as Bishop of Salisbury. It always was deceptively drinkable for a higher strength beer, tasting both complex and delicate at the same time; now our head brewer, Trevor Holmes, has spiced it up a little to make it even more lusciously aromatic - a crisp, turbo-hopped brew with wonderful citrus flavours, a real beer to savour.” Wadworth Bishop’s Tipple is a pale gold beer, brewed from low colour Optic barley with a small proportion of cane sugar added to give it a smooth, easy drinking palate. The beer was fermented at low temperature with a special yeast, carefully chosen to avoid the fruity ester flavours often associated with higher alcohol beers. The two hops used are the classic low acidity Saaz variety from Bohemia, a vital ingredient in many Czech lagers and renowned for its delicate peppery bitterness; and an equal portion by bitterness strength of Styrian Goldings hops, which contribute a smooth, rich bitterness underpinned by a spicy citrus finish. One third of the hop grist is reserved for a late infusion, so as to extract and enhance the aromatic hop oils in the brew.

It’s slightly hazy bronze with a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of dusty hops, apple and malt. The flavor has a light sweetness and notes of malt, caramel, fruit, citrus and very little spice and straw. The finish has a slightly dry bitterness.

Poured a clear amber color with a big white head that left quickly. Spot lacing. Smell is medium floral with notes of grapefruit, malt, and toffee. Taste is light malty with a clean finish on the floral hops. Also got citrus flavors with light toffee. Pretty good beer but not anything above average.

500cl bottle, 5.5 % abv version. Clear golden colour, medium white off-head that collapses quickly, generous lacing. Characterful, sweetish orange aroma and hops, with some malt. Medium-bodied, medium-to-low carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Initial taste of orchard fruit gives way to strong, broad malty bitterness with active, citric hops for balance. Dry hoppy finish, lingering medium bitter aftertaste. While you sense the slightly-higher-than-usual abv, it’s well integrated into the impressively malty character, and the taste is more complex than some. Like all strong beers, this will make you a happy drinker in no time. :=) Clearly, this an bove average strong ale.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Label now only shows 5.5 % ABV. Pours a slightly hazy pale amber with an off-white, lacinh head. Aroma of skewed British hops and vitamin C. Medium body, nuts, caramel and British hops that leave a solid bitterness. 230909

Bottle:Clear, copper coloured, visible carbonation, small and stable white foamy layer; typical "english" nose: juicy malt, subtle fruitiness with a dryish hoppy background; moderate dryish bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied, soft MF; dryish lingering hoppy and fruity finish. Fine english stuff..........
