Commercial Description:
From the 1700s through the early 1900s steamboats were used to transport people and produce the length of Seneca Lake. If there were passengers at a dock a white flag was flown during the day and a red flag in the evening. Amber Lager is a malty, full-bodied Vienna style lager. Its strong malt flavor and aroma arise from generous amounts of Vienna and Caramel malts, complimented by a delicate aroma of Tettnang and Hallertau hops. Wagner Brewing Company is pleased to announce that we received an award for excellence for Wagner Valley Dockside Amber Lager.

Bottle. Pours a dark, clear brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, bready malt, toffee, and caramel. Flavor of cola, sweet bready malt, some vegetal notes as the beer warms. Thin, watery, grainy body. The aroma/flavor composition are more like a doppelbock than a vienna to me. The flavor gets worse as you drink it. Not a fan. 6/4/5/3/11 (2.9/5)

Bottle. Aroma of nuts, sweet malt, big blast of soda syrup. Flavor of more nuts/peanut butter, sweet malt, some cherry/raisin, and more SODA. Carbonation borders on soda-like as well. I’m no expert on the matter, but I do quite like the style, and this doesn’t taste like any Vienna I’ve had, more like a really bad effort at a doppelbock. Soda bomb.

Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Sweet nutty with german style malts. Caramel, toffee, and a thin body. Not for me.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin-moderate off-white head that lasted through the first two sips and left no lace. Mild aroma of malt and not much else. The flavor is weak malt that is both bready and a bit grainy. Flat would be the best way to describe the flavor. There is some very minor hops at the finish. I would not call this a bad beer, but I would say that it is dull.

As with many of wagners beers this one was more assertively hoppy than I was expecting. Unfortunately it didn’t quite fit with this lager as the grassy hop flavor overwhelmed the delicate sweet malty side of this offering.

One more carted by my wife from NY for me. First impression: Dark! It pours reddish brown, syrupy almost. As I drink, this to me borders more on a brown ale or Irish ale with a robust flavor ... quite good, not really what I’d call an Amber lager. (#3469, 11/2008)

Pours brown with a large white head. Smells of sweet malt, citrus, tea. Tastes tarte and sweet with soe sugary hints on the finish.

(Bottle). Spicy malt aroma. Dark reddish-amber body, large off-white head. Flavor is woody, slightly sweet, plenty of character.
