After a few sips, the alcohol is definately obvious. The finish is sharpwell carbonated and tingly but the flavors seem to alternate between malty sweetness and sour notes. It reminds me a bit of port but the balance doesn’t seem quite there. With a few more aggresive notes, this one could be a contender.
Rerate at the brewery on tap: an aroma of grapes and raspberries abound with a flavor of a malted sherry. My rating has shot up despite a lingering grape-like flavor that seems to offend me. Ron (1039), Rochester, New York, USA

This has been the elusive Sled Dog that I missed at the Flour City brewfest acouple years ago because they ran out before I made it to their booth. Then I found out Beers of the World were unable to obtain the beer. JB to the rescue sending away for a varity case from Wagner and spliting it with me.
A small tan head was present on the dark beer. Nice lacing. Sweet malts were in the aroma(Carmel /Chocolate). The flavor was also very sweet and creamy. Did not notice the hops. Very enjoyable.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 1, 2006 Deep, safire-mahogany in color, generally translucent, and a short lived, thin tan fluff serving as the intermittent head. Molasses, brown sugar, dates and prunes leap out of the glass, with a second enclave consisting of unmistakable imitation vanilla extract. Golden raisins in a brandy plum sauce and some spiced apple cider bring up the aromatic rear. Flavor fits a fairly large bill. Prunes, pecans, brown sugared dates and caramelized plum pudding. Maple nut pancake syrup meets a sweet vanilla-maple fudge chunk. Though fun to drink, the vanilla extract tract is the leading lady. A heavy hitter with a body and spicing to actively entertain the mouth. Caramelized malts might be a smidgeon over-boiled but it’s bygones. A flicker of alcohol at the tongue’s tip and clinging to the tonsils comes out in the finish, along with candied pistachios, apple brandy and squishy, brown sugar dusted dates. Thanks for the bottle, tpkenned! puzzl (2650), New York, New York, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Apr 14, 2006 Nice ruby pour with zero head. Very unastonishing aroma, lacking in complexity and depth, with little more than a little molasses and dark malt. Harsh, minerally in the mouth. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 23, 2006 Bottle that mighta been sitting around for a while. It was a pain to open as the cap fell apart before finally coming off. Some slight gushing as well. Poured a cloudy reddish brown body with a large head. Huge carbonation, but nothing legendary either. Aroma has caramel, alcohol, darker fruits, light licorice. Flavor is the same, tasty but not as big of a malt base as I’d like. Different from the (few) other doppelbocks I’ve had. MaltOne (61), USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 14, 2006 Poured a little flat, modest and brief head. Pretty burnt red. Abit reticent on aroma - pleasant, slighty yeasty and toasty, but faint. Flavor was great - on the sweet side, with nice toasted malt, slight vanilla and cream flavors, with a touch of spice, and a distant charcoal aged barrel taste like a Jack Daniels. Nice mouth feel that stays on the tongue. Nice beer job thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2005 This bottled brew sampled at JSquires home poured a small sized head of frothy fine to medium sized mostly diminishing off-white colored bubbles that left behind an unnoted lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was transparent and brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild malt sweet celery . Its mouth feel is initially tingly with a lingering tingly palate and a flavorful aftertaste. Its flavor contained good bock flavor sweet malty notes and was very tasty. A very tasty bock true to the style. Thanks for sharing this one Jeff! jb (1059), Rochester, New York, USA
