I took the opportunity at Monk’s to have something a bit less heavy with dinner, so opted for this, mainly because I hadn’t seen it before in the UK. Pours a very dark brown with a thin head. Nose is malty and a little bit sour, but not as malty as the colour conjured in my head. Almost mild maltiness. Some fruitiness here, but a bit thin. Mouthfeel is a little bit fizzy, and a bit drying, but light on the palate. Quite good.

Very chocolatey nose. Some salty peanut butter too, quite deep and exciting. Sweet honey glazed smoked ham and then a burnt finish. Really good, interesting but a little thin. I think this is a grand beer.

Cask conditioned at Norwich beer Fest ’08. Brown with thin head. Some lightly roasted malt notes, a little tart fruit but otherwise pretty thin.

A Mes rate: Gravicask at Sussex Beer Festival.
Dark golden brown with a thin film topping. Fairly green malt and plenty of fruit. Nice dry chocolate finish. A little thin on the ground when it comes to character but still a decent drop.

Bottle conditioned. Dark brown with no head. Aromas are earthy malts, smoky with chocolate and some herbal notes. Flavours are chocolate malts with some citrus tang. Quite herbal and floral with resinous fruitiness and hints of metal towards the finish. Dark chocolate bitterness on the aftertaste. a cross between and old ale and a porter. Pretty good.
