Oakes (6853), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 2, 2005 Slightly hazy dark brown colour. The aroma is candyish and appley, with hints of bubblegum. Flavourwise, it’s quite funky, leathery and fruity. This I’m told is the onset of infection but at this point it’s probably improving the beer but lending vibrancy to the body and complexity to the palate, because the malts are still there in relative fullness.
TheGrandMaster (1445), Auckland, New Zealand Jun 7, 2008 Bottle, pours a reasonably clear dark amber with a thin white head. A sweet malty aroma with banana-ry phenolic notes. The palate is a little thin but has a nice gravelly finish. The flavour is more sweet and syrupy than carrying through any real characters. Not a bad NZ attempt at this style and I might be rating a little tough, but it is lacking the finesse of its continental elders. bozoNZ (361), Christchurch, New Zealand May 3, 2008 330ml bottle. Amber brown with a faint thin head. Light spicey nose, dark fruits and warm alcohol aroma. Full flavours but thin body. Roasted & light chocolate flavours with sherry-like warm alcohol and fruitcake / dried apricot tendancies. Could be a really good beer but just lacks the malt guts to give it the body it needs. beer_ledgend (796), Meadowbank Auckland, New Zealand Feb 8, 2007 Dark red/brown in colour with small white head which disappeared quickly (probably n the next ferry back to Auckland!!) Big rasin aroma, warm mouth feel, watery thin body. As suggested waited 20 minutes and at room temp. JoeMcPhee (3692), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Aug 1, 2005 330 ml bottle. Dark brown beer with a thin light brown head. Nice spicy aroma, hops are quite noticable in the nose, spicy/grassy Hallertauer, some toasted and chocolate malts as well. Clean finish. It’s missing the really big fruity character that should be in a dubbel, but it is still very enjoyable.
