arjoseph (557), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 30, 2008 GABF 2007. Huge creamy head over a clear brown orange beer. Nice sub-surface racing is deep and somewhat slow. Smells like fresh apple cider, accented by melony pinot grigio acid. Brett and dark salty yeast textures attach to the back of the tongue after the first sip. Nice level of carbonation. The fruitiness is delayed, emerges in the finish, with soft honey, melon, and crisper cherry notes. There seems to be a little corn sugar in the finish too, and unintegrated sugars floating around all over the place, which detracts mightily from the overall impression. Glad I tried it. skoisirius (480), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 25, 2008 Also finally found this one on tap at Belmont...stoked! Pours a fairly darker brown with lighter tan see through near the edges. Fairly quick dissappearing light tan head. The aroma brings light sweet malts reminding me of cherries, with nuts found being swarmed by a fairly thick kombucha note which permiates everything else once it hits the nostrils. There is some spice in there to, not sure where that Angeloregon (2000), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 14, 2008 Poured on tap at Belmont Station in Portland, OR--Deep gnarley brown hazy body with a minimal whitish head. Sweet, mildly (for a sour) sour nose. This beer had the obvious sparkling kombucha characteristics, but the brown sugar mixture didn’t work in my opinion (as a kombucha lover). Up the nose spiciness, but lacking a true funky sparkling freshness. Ok. Not really bad, just weird, but not OMG weird like I was hoping for. DA (2468), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 12, 2008 I finally found this one at Belmont Station, intrigued by the funky kombucha creature and what it might do to a beer. The flavor is a strange mix of sweet beer with an ice tea, herbal funk mix. It didn’t turn out all that sour, more mild sourness with an interesting sweetness added, very unlike any beer I’d had, more a ice tea like earthy herbal sweetness on top of the brown ale body. Interesting and possibly nice on a hot day, but I wish it had more sourness. SuzyGreenberg (1028), Seattle, Washington, USA May 16, 2008 draft @ brouwer’s sour fest - intrigued by this heading in and it certainly wasn’t a let down on in interesting factor; murky, dark brown with thin tan head to the edges; aromas are sour and earthy; grainy and a little dirty and fun funky; obvious mushroom aromas come off after it warms up a bit; flavors are a mildly sour mix of dried fruit, wood and some slight funk; honestly, reminded me of food and of childhood memories of the crab cakes at wells breach, maine; some chewy, chocolate flavors come out in the finish as i drank this over several hours; strange and fascinating and unlike anything i’ve had before
