TikiE (352), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Jun 19, 2008 On tap: a dark brown color that smells of chocolate roast. Tastes lighter than it looks but its somewhat sweet with good carbonation. Its looks a little bit like coca cola.
BillKismet (1443), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 25, 2007 Dark brown with a silken head. Light, rough roastiness in aroma. Flavors jumble off each other, with a slight nuttiness. More akin to a robust brown ale than a schwarzbier in flavor, but decent overall. harlequinn (2746), Tacoma, Washington, USA Jul 16, 2006 Deep rich brown coloring. Nose is soft, with hints of chocolate, and roasted hazelnuts. Smooth, but bittersweet, and not really what I expected judging by the descriptors for the style. Slightly porterish to me Ernest (4250), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jun 15, 2006 Draught.
Head is mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, cocoa powder/chocolate, husks), lightly hoppy (resin), with a light note of vanilla.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky.
Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
Not quite a Schwarzbier in the manner I am used to from German examples (too chocolatey and sweet), but not that bad. Rather husky. Good appearance and mouthfeel. Ringo (959), Loveland, Colorado, USA Oct 8, 2002 Pleasing nutty flavor, and fairly true to the style.
