Commercial Description:
Brewed by Warbird Brewing Company specifically for JK O’Donnell’s Irish Ale House, “The Shanty” is a full-bodied Irish style Red Ale featuring rich red color and smooth malty sweetness. In comparison to “dry-style” Irish Ales, the slight extra sweetness makes this a perfect pairing for food, as well as for enjoying a pint for refreshment. Named after the personal aircraft of World War II fighter Ace, Lt. Gilbert O’Brien, P-51B Mustang “Shanty Irish”.

Bottle. Pours a creamy, dark brown, with a thick tan head. Malty aroma, with hints of raisin and toffee. Medium, almost heavy, body and sweet. Finishes quickly for the sweetness.

Pours a nice amber-red with a good amount of tan head. Aroma is reminiscent of black olives with a bit of alcohol bite. Flavor is sweet and smokey with a hint of hops A little watery, but otherwise quite good.

12 oz. bottle via trade with beastiefan2k - Pours a clear mahogany color with a one and a half finger thick light tan head. Light lacing. Has a bready, raw malt aroma. Flavor is lightly sweetened toasted malt and light herbal hops. Medium body. Has no lingering or unpleasant aftertastes. A very pleasant beer. Thanks Eugene.

I shared a 12 oz bottle with MereLikesBeer. Got it from Andersons in Toledo OH. This poured a reddish brown with a tan head. The aroma was sweet and caramely. I thoroughly enjoyed this first impression from Warbird. It’s definitely a proper session ale that I would get again. Cheers!

This is a pretty tasty beer. I tried this beer with BeerBaron617 today, it was one of our road trip beers. It poured a nice sepia color with an off white head. The aroma was difficult at first to pinpoint. It is sort of sweet, malty and maybe toasted? I tasted it and thought it was watery, but decided that it just has a very light mouthfeel. It tastes a bit sour but sweet and like toffee a bit.

Bottle from Pat’s Liquors in Porter, IN: I appreciate that this was named for a WWII ace’s plane, but when growing up in Chicago (admittedly many moons ago), the southside Irish considered the term to be highly insulting. The beer has a deep reddish amber body with a short-lived off-white head. It has a worty-sweet nose, caramelly and unchecked. The flavor is much the same but has a slight touch of roastiness and some fresh apples. Not something I’d drink again.

Dark brown pour with an off white head. Aroma of yeast and pale malts. Flavor of caramel and some roasted malts. Not too complicated. Medium body. Some alcohol in the finish.

I love the bread aromas and flavors in Irish ale, I really do. Incredible earthy nose, fresh baked bread (wheat, a touch of rye and sourdough), wet leaves. Flavor is all bread and some iron. Delicious. Body a tad thin, but intensely drinkable. Thanks Bfan2K!
