Commercial Description:
Brewed by Warbird Brewing Company specifically for JK O’Donnell’s Irish Ale House, “The Shanty” is a full-bodied Irish style Red Ale featuring rich red color and smooth malty sweetness. In comparison to “dry-style” Irish Ales, the slight extra sweetness makes this a perfect pairing for food, as well as for enjoying a pint for refreshment. Named after the personal aircraft of World War II fighter Ace, Lt. Gilbert O’Brien, P-51B Mustang “Shanty Irish”.

My 800th rating for the US. Bottle. Nose has caramel and toffee, toasted grain, almost entirely malt, save for some light grassy citrus. Deep mahogany-chestnut pour with a short beige head. Taste is bittersweet, full of toasted grain and strong caramel and toffee, lightly spicy and nicely dry. Light body, dry with just a touch of dark pitted fruit. Great session

Pours dark reddish-copper, with a dense, foamy, cream colored head. Thick swaths of patchy lacing coat the glass well. Aromas include toasted bread, caramel, light floral hops, and not much else. Flavors, too, were simple, with sweet caramel malts and toasted grains being balanced by slightly spicy, grassy and floral hops. There’s a strange sourness that lingers towards the end. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a creamy finish. There’s really not a whole lot going on, but it is decent and drinkable.

On tap; poured a dark, reddish/copper. Off white head. Aroma was of caramel, toffee and toasted malt. Flavor was similar, with more pronounced toffee and fruit notes. Solid sessionable.

Draft at JK O’Donnells in Fort Wayne. Poured a clear copper color with a moderate fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and hop aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a light to medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Drinkable brew.

12oz - Strong aroma lingers from my end table. Hops, toffee, caramel, toasted crystal malts. Pours murky red with a medium head and great lacing. Flavor is a bit rustier than aroma. Caramel, crystal malts and a slight hoppy back. Palate is sticky. Not bad at all.

A good local brew, ranks right up there with a Murphy’s Red Style. I found this to be on sale finally at the local store, however my first time trying this was at JKODonnell’s here in the Fort. I rather did enjoy the distinct flavor and heartiness that comes with most Irish Style Ales, it’s a good time had by all.

Pours red with a thin white head. Smells earthy with some tea hints. Tastes of sweet malt, light pepper, some spice. Decent.

Draft at JK O’Donnells, Fort Wayne, IN. Smalll tan head that mostly diminished, spotty amounts of lacing, transparent, no visible carbonation, and a reddish orange hue. Nose was malty, caramel, sweet, and some dark fruits. Ditto for the flavor. Smooth mouthfeel and medium body. This was just an okay beer for me. Nothing really knocked my socks off about it. It’s quaffable, easy to drink, a decent session beer, but needs a boost to the flavor IMO.
