Commercial Description:
Brewed by Warbird Brewing Company specifically for JK O’Donnell’s Irish Ale House, “The Shanty” is a full-bodied Irish style Red Ale featuring rich red color and smooth malty sweetness. In comparison to “dry-style” Irish Ales, the slight extra sweetness makes this a perfect pairing for food, as well as for enjoying a pint for refreshment. Named after the personal aircraft of World War II fighter Ace, Lt. Gilbert O’Brien, P-51B Mustang “Shanty Irish”.

@Indiana Beerfest-pours a light tan head and red/copper color. Aroma is medium malt-slight chocolate. Taste is smooth medium malt-slight chocolate which off sets the coppery hops. Mild carbonation.

Pours red with a thin white head. Smells earthy with some tea hints. Tastes of sweet malt, light pepper, some spice. Decent.

Bottle from Pat’s Liquors in Porter, IN: I appreciate that this was named for a WWII ace’s plane, but when growing up in Chicago (admittedly many moons ago), the southside Irish considered the term to be highly insulting. The beer has a deep reddish amber body with a short-lived off-white head. It has a worty-sweet nose, caramelly and unchecked. The flavor is much the same but has a slight touch of roastiness and some fresh apples. Not something I’d drink again.

Draft at JK O’Donnells in Fort Wayne. Poured a clear copper color with a moderate fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and hop aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a light to medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Drinkable brew.

Dark, copper colored body with a dense and long lasting khaki head on top. The nose is strong with a lot of caramel and peanuts. There is also some bread crust. The taste has sweet cake donuts with a little bit of spice in the finish. It is almost like coriander and burned almond shell. A decent enough beer, but a little sharp in that strange finish.

This draft brew from a restaurant poured a small sized head of foamy off-white colored bubbles that were fully diminished and left behind a transparent softly carbonated red brown colored body. The mild aroma was brown malt Irish Red malty and nutty. The crisp semi-thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of nutty and Irish red malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

Bottle. Sadly, Warbird has closed its doors, so it was with some reluctance that I cracked this open. This poured with a nice rounded body, deep ruddy red with a hearty head of foam. The aroma is big and toasty, with a definite caramel kick. This drinks with the same character, richly sweet with toasted caramel, a little apple butter, and woodsy bark. Good. (#3746, 11/20/2009)

Draft at JK O’Donnells, Fort Wayne, IN. Smalll tan head that mostly diminished, spotty amounts of lacing, transparent, no visible carbonation, and a reddish orange hue. Nose was malty, caramel, sweet, and some dark fruits. Ditto for the flavor. Smooth mouthfeel and medium body. This was just an okay beer for me. Nothing really knocked my socks off about it. It’s quaffable, easy to drink, a decent session beer, but needs a boost to the flavor IMO.
