icarus (54), The Colony, Texas, USA Sep 18, 2005 Nothing wrong here. It is a lager and its a good lager. Sweet and smooth, malty grainy taste. snclrlws (19), Hanover, New Hampshire, USA Sep 15, 2005 Fairly thick, off-white head that left very little lacing on the glass. Aroma consists of some chocolate, caramel, and just a hint of ass. You can tell before you drink this beer that it’ll be alright, but not worth getting another sixer of. Bitter at the start, but sweetening towards the finish, which is the only thing that makes this beer drinkable. The palate is a little thin, but not horribly so. All in all, a beer that is not really worth having around one’s refrigerator. beeryum (652), Norcross, Georgia, USA Sep 13, 2005 Draft. Light caramel malt aroma, maybe some hops. More of the same for flavors, with a distinctive acidic/sour note added. Thin, mediocre. Tybalt (56), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Sep 12, 2005 Updated: Aug 27, 2006Everytime I buy this beer it seems different. Sometimes it has a great head, and sometimes it seems to have no head at all. It doesn’t have much of an aroma at all, but it has a nice smooth, rich, and almost chocolatey taste. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 10, 2005 The aroma is sweet with hints of hops and paper. The appearance is chocolate brown and the head is small and goes away fast. The flavor is not bad save the saltiness. Nothing really stands out, except the saltiness, as exceptional good or bad. Its pretty typical for a Dunkel. A caramel sweetness and a roasted malt. The hops have an astringent bitterness that hits you in the finish. Palate is somewhat watery but somehow it avoids being too weak. If you are looking for a really good Dunkel you could do better but it is not a terrible beer. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 9, 2005 On Tap, Ciro’s. Dark brown pour, slick little tan head. Mild cola like sweet malt aroma. Thin mouthfeel. Taste is slightly sweet malt, but very thin and watery. Drinkable, but pretty average stuff without a lot of character. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Sep 8, 2005 Updated: Sep 9, 2005Draught. At Ciro’s. Poured dark reddish black (almost opaque) with a small light brown head. Aroma very sweet malt with curious notes of grapes, cereal grains, burnt candy and a tiny harsh metallic tang. Taste is also grapey, with mild roast malt, almost root beer sweet, a bit sour on the finish - a bit of dry staw flavour on warming. Mouthfeel is thin and a bit flat and minerally. Keep it cold and it’s decent, but nothing to get excited about - it’s just a dunkel, after all ... pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Aug 30, 2005 Bottle: A burnt sienna color with a quickly diminishing light brown head. Through my August allergies, I noticed up on aromas of sweet malts like polished shoe leather with a thin coating of sorghum. The feel is thin and pleasant. The taste isn’t spectacular, but not bad either. It is refreshing and has a wheatty aftertaste. It seemed to have lots of carbonation. I would prefer a little more in the initial aftertaste. It is like you have to wait about 15 seconds before you are invited to take another drink. I like the invitation right away and then if you resist, to have it followed by the lingering aftertaste. Dunkels are to light for my tastes, but I can enjoy one every now and then.
