On tap. I thought I had rated this, so I am lucky I took down some notes. Color was darkish amber. Flavor was chalky, roasted and bready. I couldn’t pick up much aroma. Better than expected.

Deep brown to near-black in color, fine off-white head , but leaves very quickly. Soft, sweet aromas, hints of cocoa, raisins, nuts. Slightly harsh initial mouthfeel, light body, minimal texture, a little gritty, a little flinty. Very little character in this beer , not quite the flavor or sweetness one usually finds in the better dunkels. Something’s missing, and we’ll freely quote from Homer Simpson. "Hello? Taste?"

The beer looks better than it tastes. Beautiful clear chestnut brown. Small but persistent off-white head. Smells like caramel, with a hint of chocolate and a tang I can't quite place. Unremarkable mouthfeel. The taste is surprisingly bland, a faint bitterness from the roasted barley, quickly overcome by sweetness. Not as good as the Verum.

Dark amber-brown color. Nutty malt aroma. Flavor is almost all malt and little else. Lacks complexity. Syrupy palate and a flat body. Disappointing.

Bottle. Light grain and dark malt with some nuttiness in the nose. Pours amber with a brownish tinge and a soapy, fizzly tanned head. Sweetish taste with nuttiness, light chocolate and a good dose of caramel - a lot like a candy bar. Faint sourness doesn’t serve this well but does match the light graininess, and the overall blend is fine. Touch of herb. Pleasant/lightly crisp mf. Medium-full, malty body and a good enough reason to break out the Warsteiner glass. :) Really, a decent mass-produced, I wouldn’t turn down another.

This was pretty much a cheap German lager with dark food coloring. I didn't get much character out of this dunkel, although it was sweet. Otherwise the aroma had hints of metallic hops. A lame example; I'm surprised this is actually referred to as a dunkel on this website as it lacks character.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark brown with red highlights and a puffy brown head. Aroma is slightly malty with some vegetable hints. Taste is sweet and malty with some caramel at the end. A bit watery but not a bad beer if you want to have a few.
