Aroma of malt, some hops, toffee, and cognac. Tastes malty, with some toffee, cabernet, and smoky qualities at the finish. Mr. Beer below me should be booted from this site. I’m willing to bet his name is Hyman Rosenberg. Ernest (4500), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Mar 2, 2002 Updated: Aug 1, 2007Bottle (BB 04/08). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, fully diminishing. Body is medium to dark brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, caramel, roasted nuts), lightly hoppy (herbs), with a light note of DMS. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Rather cookie-cutter and indistinctive. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Dec 31, 2005 12 oz bottle in a motel room in Sandusky, OH. Dark caramel with a small lasting head...dry, roasty-grainy aroma, surprisingly fresh but unimaginative...body a bit earthy and herbal, again fairly dry...mouthfeel fairly bland and rather watery. bhensonb (4355), Woodland, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 20, 2007 Draft at Gustav’s, Portland, Or. Aroma of dark roasted malt. Deep brown color with a dissipating off-white head; medium body. Sharp carbonation. Noble hops match the malt. Pretty tasty. In the finish the malt tends to dominate, but the hops build and persist. Very good dunkle in a light sort of way. Nice bitter into the finish. heemer77 (4311), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 5, 2005 On tap at the local Old Chicago, Coralville, IA. The body is a very dark brown with some red showing through. The aroam had bubblegum and some fresh grass. There was also a little bit of hay. The taste is slightly dry with some light tobacco and hay. Finishes with funky mushrooms and bread. I like this one as a session beer. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 9, 2007 Nutty and malty aroma is quite sweet. Clear chestnut brown coloured body is topped by a low cream coloured head that recedes rapidly to a thin partial cover and ring. Nutty and sweet malts with light bitterness. Never cloying or sticky but tasty and refreshing. Light medium body with strong effervescence that stimulates the tip of the tongue. Tulip glass. Allowed to warm from fridge temperature. Bottle (BCLS at 39th and Cambie, Apr-07). BBB63 (4267), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Jun 8, 2006 Bottle and served in a big ole stein: Poured a rich mahogany hue topped a fading frothy beige head and okay lace. The nose is a weak characterisctics of caramel, toffee, walnut, allspice, and grassy hops. The taste clean blend of malt and noble grassy hops balanced sweet and bitterness. Sadly for the balance there is little depth. A session Dunkel bier I guess. There is a note of a vegetal flavor on the aftertaste which is lightly distracting. The mouth feel is fizzy and watery. I too was left wanting more, an almost macro dunkel, sad.
