| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 11, 2004 12 oz. brown, longneck bottle. Freshness date of 23 Feb 05. Still fairly fresh then, I guess.Poured out the color of brown shoe polish, with a minimal white head on it. Aromas are of roasted malts, some yeastiness, and not much else. I can barely detect a smattering of hops, but it is fleeting. Tastes are of malts, some coffee notes, yeast, and a slight, but quickly disappearing note of hops. Slightly bitter tasting, but it’s more from the malts than the hops. Mouthfeel is on the thinner side of things, kind of leaves you wanting and expecting something more. An ok beer at best. Not something I would go out of my way to find again, however. probstk (1064), Nepean, Ontario, Canada

App.: Fairly deep mahogany, clear, fair light tan head.
Aroma: Light black coffee, lightly vinous and tart, a little wood, a touch of funk (hard to imagine), a bit of grain/cereal.
Palate: Macro medium body and carbonation.
Flav.: Cardboard up front (dang), a bit of medium-roasted malt, hints of caramel, a touch of wood; dry with almost no bitterness and a wee bit of caramel on the finish; lacking.
Nice colour but the nose and flavour don’t keep up. obguthr (1060), Poquoson, Virginia, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2006 On tap at the castle on King:
Tapped a lustrous chestnut color....small off white cap lasts a while then reduced to a surface lace.
Good dose of Dunkel aromas: Sweet bread and cocoa some toastyness, light herbal sharpness.
Medium-light bodied, fair Munich malt spine, buttery mouth feel, smooth rounded character.
Up front you get to chew on some delicious dark Munich malt with its bready-sweet cocoa notes then the herbal spalter hops kick in to balance...mid palate there are some nutty tastes giving a sort of a liquid brownie when the cocoa malts meet the nut tones....medium finish...clean, malty, lightly bittered with herbal tones and a bready aftertaste.
A good solid commercial German dunkel...no surprises...om the light side for a dunkel but very drinkable and pleasing.
