Lightly roasted nose with an additional aroma resembling saaz hops. Taste is of roastymalt, caramel and some hops. not much else. Moderately sweet, not much bitterness detedted in the aftertaste. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. No lacing or head retention. Overall drinkable buy not really special. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 16, 2004 Pretty weak in the aroma category...almost smells like their Verum, but not nearly as strong, no smell of roasted malts to speak of. Looks nice, deep brown with a decent light tan head. Nice flavor with hints of chocolate and coffee on top of the malts. Not nearly as full bodied as a stout, as it should be, but a little bitter on the aftertaste. This beer is apparently the poster child for dunkel beers. Much better fare than the Verum. I would drink this again. kimcgolf (832), Dacula, Georgia, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Oct 14, 2006 I was really disappointed by this beer, so much so that I think it may have just been a bad sample. I used to drink this occassionally, before I started rating and trying various beers, and I liked it. But I’ll go with what I had tonite. Poured to a medium brown, with a very thin off-white head, that dissipated almost immediately, and left little lacing. Aroma was almost skunky, with just a hint of malt. Flavor was nothing special, and the finish was very dry. I will most likely try this one again just to give it a fair shot at redemption. mansquito (830), Boston/Philadelphia, USA

Malty, but the malts don’t taste like other dark beers. Metallic finish. A meh beer. msante79 (830), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA

Flavor is of caramel, toffee and roasted malts. My first dunkel so unsure what to expect. This was a little watery for my liking but with caramel and roasted malts it is enjoyable. Aroma of... sardines and anchovies? Strange to say, but distinct. Black color, of course. Fair looks to this babe. Sips on it... reminds me of spring fields on rolling Appalachian hillsides. Or something of the sort. Not overly impressed, but reminded me I need to get back into them mountains for adventures. cb (809), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA
