I never got this beer. Always thought of it as one of Germany’s worst, but it is treated like it’s this venerable classic. It’s drinkable, but over carbonated which makes having more than a few a chore for me.

Amazingly, I was up for sampling a few beers the night after the Fort Wayne tasting. Had this on tap at the Steinkeller in Oxford, OH. Nothing remarkable or interesting. Clear straw-colored body, with a thin white head. Grassy, bitter hops aroma. Flavor was much the same, with grassy, bitter hops and a very light malt backbone. Thin-bodied and typical of foreign macroswill.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Clear yellow color with a fizzy white head. Aroma is slightly dry and bitter with some hints of hops. The flavor is very bitter and hoppy at the front but the bitterness disappears quickly and leaves a very nice clean finish. A bit watery, but a good pilsner.

Very pale yellow color with no depth. Little aroma and little head. The beer is a little thin and maybe the bottle I had was a little skunky, but it was not smooth and frankly not that good. Maybe it paled because we were drinking Hofbrauhaus on tap all night. It must be the best selling beer in Germany in the same way that Bud is the best seller in America.

On tap. Light golden in colour with a small white head. Weak and thin. Notes of malt and hops. Too sterile.

Appearance is very pale, moderate lasting head. Not much in terms of aroma, but not displeasing. A hoppy taste with a very dry aftertaste.

Can. Pale yellow/golden. Snowy white, fluffy head. Good laces. Very weak aroma, hints og malt and hops. Clean taste, but also weak and bland malt and grain flavors. Surprisingly low hopbitterness for the type. High carbonation level, short dry finish. Drinkable, but light all over.

Clean and crisp in flavor. No head retention. Nice yellow color. Typical for this style. Pleasant to drink.
