Commercial Description:
This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

Sampled in the Salt Lake City airport while waiting for my connection to Vegas. Hazy nut-brown, moderate head. Low aroma, nutty, caramel. Same palate, almost bland. This is closer to a watery amber than a porter. Too much carbonation. Disappointing.

Bottle and draft. Agree with other raters that this is my favorite from Schirf, but still not great. Almost no head nice roasted coffee notes but too little flavor.

Bottled sample via presario. Very dark brown in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of molasses, plum, caramel, and a bit of roasted malt. Not a very impressive flavor profile: thin and astringent, with strong and somewhat empty roasted malt, a touch of caramel, and an odd sour fruit note. A bit of milk chocolate and roasted nuts. Somewhat watery. Not good overall.

12 ounce bottle shared by grant. I believe this is my first Utah beer. Aroma has some light roasted burnt malty notes, but I also get a chemical aroma..acetone or nailpolish remover also seems to be present. Just has a weird nose. Transparent dark amber/mahogany body with a small, light tan head. Brightly carbonated start, which has a little bit of roasted malt flavors. Lightly burnt in the middle with a touch of coffee flavor. Finishes quite thin and bland. This seems closer to a Brown Ale than a porter.

Bottle from Secret Santa. Dark brown body with a small, fading tan head. The aroma is molasses, milk chocolate and raisins. The flavor is coffee, milk chocolate, brown sugar and nuts, fairly dry and roasted. Medium/light body is soft with light carbonation. Decent brown porter.

On draft at Squatters SLC brewpub. Flavor light, but good. Chocolate, coffe and roasted malt. Biggest detriment was a light palate with some astringency. Flavor was alright, with some decent hop presence.
