Pours a dark but clear reddish brown with a moderate tan head that lasted through mid-glass and left partial lace. Light aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is predominantly roasted malt with notes of tobacco and chocolate as well. A bit light bodied, especially for a porter. Overall an ok beer. dkachur (2429), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Pours a dark ruby tinted brown color with a thin head, good retention and lacing. Huge chocolate notes in the aroma with faint roast and hops. Taste is chocolate, caramel and coffee with the faintest nutty finish. Medium bodied. Quite nice. 6/4/8/4/14 Narnad (723), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 18, 2009 Pours a dark brown with a low tan head. Aroma is a lightly roasted malt, slight soy, lots of chocolate malt overall and some light grassy hops. Flavor begins as chocolate, caramel and other roasted malts, all of which really come through, some soy middle but ends with a coca powderish flavor for the ending. Density of the beer is very light with a moderate carbonation rate. Overall not the best but nothing really to complain about. Too rough a pour unleashes 4 fingers of light brown head, which fades slowly to but a tiny island of thin bubbles. Minimal lacing.
Smells of roasty chocolate and coffee, with a hit of earthy hopiness.
The flavors reveal quite a bit of burnt/smoky roastiness. Light sweetness. A bit of coffee, some slight earthiness. Low ABV stays unsurprisingly inconspicuous.
Moderately high carbonation. Quite thin and watery. This beers major weakness that is holding it back, IMO.
Decent beer with a classic name and label that I was happy to get to try. If the thickness was improved, this beer would be significantly better. mbgrayson (150), Anaconda, Montana, USA

The aroma is mixed nuts, chocolate malt, a little bit of roastiness, some ashy sweetness. The flavor is green bark, chocolate malt, a kind of strange burnt element, and mixed nuts. The finish is nutty and slightly sweet, with a cola finish. Drinkable, but not great. stefanje (953), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA

The aroma is mild with malts, molasses and brown sugar. The flavor is sweet and earthy, there is some weak caramel and dust. The mouthfeel is thin and a bit watery. The finish is short and dry. Overall: a very ordinary brown ale, not a porter at all.
