Commercial Description:
This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

Bottle… Very dark crimson ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Mocha aroma with a more subtle note of cashews. Medium-bodied and watery with lively carbonation. Leans on the malty side of balance. Chocolaty and nutty with a hint of coffee. Modest bitterness. Very nice despite mild cardboard-like oxidation. Crisp, clean finish. Thanks to Douglas88 for sending this one my way!

12 oz bottle from Douglas88; Nose of roasty coffee, caramel, and brown sugar; clear brown with medium tan head; taste is pretty good with coffee, a tiny hop bitterness, and caramel, but the 4% body is pretty watery. If I lived in Utah I would drink this when I could not get to the State liquor Store for something more potent like a Sierra Nevada Porter that I saw there.

12 oz. bottle in trade from Douglas88- thank you! Served in pint glass- poured black with ruby tint when held to light source, half finger tan head displayed some lacing. Aroma of a lightly roasted malt, coffee, and brown sugar. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt is nicely roasted and enjoyable, middle is a little light (to be expected for the ABV), finish has nice hop/spice bite-very balanced. Not bad.

Courtesy of ibrew2or3. Pours black, with a light beige head. Aroma is roasted (butterscotch). Taste is lightly roasted malts, some spices in aftertaste, some fruit notes and light coffee. Pretty amazing brew for only 4% abv. Update 10-17-09, courtesy of wasatch. flavor was a lot better than I could remember. Lots of good chocolate, lingering oats, roast and malts, full flavor with some nice coffee. At times, some lactose gave the overall mouthfeel a milk-chocolate impression with a light touch of bitterness.

Its a very funny concept and marketing campaign. I’d rather not have one at all really. It’s only 4%, basically no taste, and a slight barley in the after. Utah, stop.

Pours a rich black from the bottle with a ruby tint when held to the light. Smells of cocoa and toasted malts. Tastes primarily of bittersweet baking cocoa and caramel. Very earthy mouthfeel and well balanced.

12 oz. bottle, from Beers of the World pack, meh. Poured an opaque ebony color with a creamy beige head. Aroma of roasty malts, bitter chocolate and herbs. Flavor is fine, deep roasty malts, more of the bitter chocolate with some ripe dark fruit and herbal notes. Medium body and lightly tingly carbonation. Not bad, quite drinkable.
