Commercial Description:
This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

7-3-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to Footbalm
Dark brown black with a decent beige head at first but it doesn’t last long. Smell is musky and earthy roastedness. Flavor is watery and ashy and a touch musky too. Palate is weak and underplayed.

Bottle in a generous free box courtesy of Footbalm. Thanks!!
Pours dark brown and transluscent with a medium beige colored head. Smell is lightly roasty but watery as well. Slight sourness in the nose. Taste is lightly roasty with a cigarette, ash and smoke like flavor. Very odd. Thin body and medium carbonation. Eh...

Reddened chocolate brown. Sticky, plasticky aroma of root beer sugar, dried caramel, wet cardboard, brown sugar cookie dough. Good rich roast lingers and lends some muscle. Some graham cracker and some chocolate. Always creamy, and sometimes too much so.

Barky earth and plain coffee flavor with a great, gritty, dirty maple syrup sweetness. Wet and smoky, like autumn leaves stewing in a hickory fire. Simmering that fresh syrup. Lightly lactic sweetness and almost salty red meat savoriness. Warm. Sugar stays strong, and the stale-ish mustiness of the malt is somewhat overcoming.

Medium body is somewhat chalky and astringent; finishes bittersweetly with caramel sweetened coffee and sticky, musty residual sugar. Not as bad as advertised; highly drinkable for the most part. Thanks Joshua!

A suprisingly light porter that pours a dark but still visibly clear brown colour with a moderate sized head. Nice nutty aroma, roasted malts and sweet carmel, very light mouthfeel with a sweet but watery finish.

Bottle as an extra from someone. Drank 3/4 before seeing its incredibly low score. Very surprising! I think this a pretty solid porter... dry, balanced, lightly chalky, not big in flavor but mild and drinkable. A solid session beer.

Thanks to Eric for the bottle! Poured clear auburn with a short cap of sticky beige head. The aroma picked up somewhat artificially-sweetened chocolate and caramel notes with mild roast.. there was an overriding air of cleanser that really put me off.. some herbal and brown sugar notes. The flavor was rather empty in the middle with some sweeter chocolates and other toasty black malts.. sticky caramel and chocolate on the finish.. not offensive, but it wasn’t very enjoyable. Light-medium bodied with a near-watery middle and a not-so-good flow across the palate.. again, nothing awful about this, but it surely didn’t do a whole lot of good.

On draft, I thought this was oustanding. I am really impressed that these Utah brewers can do so much with a 4% ABV limit. Great chocolate notes and a silky body.

Aroma had some light chocolate hints and a little staleness. Flavor was pretty boring also. Pretty smooth tasting overall but nothing special.
