Commercial Description:
This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

Very dark amber with a nice tan head. Nice hoppy roasted chocolate taste with a roasty finish. Very, very smooth tasting beer. One of the better porters in my opinion.

Pours mahogony, with ample head that sticks well down the glass. Sour, Burnt chocolate smell. Very smooth. I expected it to be sweeter, but it’s not. It’s dry & crisp. Mild cocoa flavor with a litlle Hop bitterness. Typical of black malt. Finishes dry, & clean. Stupid name. Utah kicked out all their polygamists. Sent them all to Colorado and Arizona.

I’ve had this beer both on tap and out of the bottle. I have to say that although it does taste better on tap, the flavor was pretty consistent between the two. I rated this beer so highly because of it’s drinkability, which is something that I think most porters lack. I love the way porters taste generally, but to have more than one or two is asking a bit much out of me. This is definitely a beer that I could go through several of and still want more.

Clearish mahogany brown color, thin off- light brown head that lifted quickly away, lacing in minimal spots. Aroma is of choclate milk that has just enough touch of toasted/roasted grainy malts underneath to give it some complexity. Taste is mostly chocolatey with a favorable milky flavor that has a nutty toastyness within some of the finish that I really liked. There’s a bit of roasted coffeeness to it too thats mellow on the bittering and keeps the chocolate tones from going into something maybe a bit to much. The feel is what lacks within, a bit thin throughout, clean and dry finish thats not bad, actually quite good, it just needs some body with a bit of heft and some creamyness. Still enjoyed the hell out of this beer while in my hiking and camping days in Utah. Maybe because I was really thirsty that I reviewed with such high numbers, but sometimes its just about that. During my ten days in Utah I had quite a few stinker beers and this wasn’t one of them. Call me crazy or thirsty, its not bad at all.

Courtesy of ibrew2or3. Pours black, with a light beige head. Aroma is roasted (butterscotch). Taste is lightly roasted malts, some spices in aftertaste, some fruit notes and light coffee. Pretty amazing brew for only 4% abv. Update 10-17-09, courtesy of wasatch. flavor was a lot better than I could remember. Lots of good chocolate, lingering oats, roast and malts, full flavor with some nice coffee. At times, some lactose gave the overall mouthfeel a milk-chocolate impression with a light touch of bitterness.

Bottle, courtesy Ibrew2or3. Reddish brown pour, creamy head and thick lacing. Aromas of chocolate and caramel, slight smokiness. Very creamy. Flavor is of roasted notes, chocolate, creamy coffee. Pretty malty. Smooth body, sticky, slightly bitter. Really surprised by this one, it’s damn good.

This is one of the finest beers ever produced in the state of Utah. It has an excellent roasted aroma, and a delightful aftertaste. To remove points for alcohol content is like saying that the Three Stooges were stupid because they wern’t f ilmed in color. A wonderful beer from a wonderful place.
