Has a one and a half finger thick off white head. Light lacing. Aroma is toasted and caramel malt. Flavor is a full toasted malt, almosty biscuity. Medium body. Has a lingering malty after tasty. A decent beer. FlacoAlto (2482), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 3, 2008 A smooth, but quick pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a two-finger thick, tan colored head. The beer is a fairly clear, red tinged, full amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, copper tinged, light cranberry hue when held up to the light. The aroma is certainly malt focused, but also has an off-putting cabbage note to it. Lightly concentrated malt aromatics (light for a Doppelbock), toasty malt aromas, sweet caramelized malt sugars and even a touch of raisin character is noticeable. Somehow the aroma just seems a bit jarring; that sort of cabbage note really gets in the way of things for me.
Sweet tasting and not overly rich, the sweetness is actually fairly clean compared to the richness of most Doppelbocks and it seems to accentuate atypical, fruity notes of raisins and berries. A touch of lightly astringent, darker malt notes add some sharpness towards the finish and there is touch of cabbage character that lingers on in the finish. This is pretty well carbonated as it can taste fizzy at times, though I think the lighter body contributes to this as well. This seems to lack the deep richness that I like to find in the best examples of this style. I would never have guessed this was 8%abv, it seems a bit lighter than this.
This is not a bad beer, it just doesn’t quite have enough richness and malt complexity for me. Because of this it is a bit disappointing, though the slight off-notes don’t help things either. matt7215 (993), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | May 29, 2008 Aroma is malty and sweet with some hints of earth, grass or dirt. Taste is a bit strange with lingering bitterness. No balanced flavor or flavor at all for a DB. Not too good. Another possible re-rate. EithCubes (2167), Indiana, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 19, 2008 Rating no. 1616, a bottle from douglass88 - thanks! Aroma sweet grapey, fruity nose, brown sugar sweetness with some off-note (strong stale rubber). Strange musty cracker. Ruby-brown pour with a tan head. Taste is crackery roast with too-simplistic sugary fruit, bitterness, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol warmth. Spice, waft of earthy smoke/peat, and plastic in the alcohol fuming. Full body and dry, yeasty aftertaste. There’s a little too much wrong here to really appreciate what’s right. DrnkMcDermott (1861), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 16, 2008 12 oz. Bottle. Last of my trade hail from Douglas88; thanks dude. Amazing that no other double bock thought of the name "Devastator." Pours a rich dark amber color, well filtered, rocky white lager head. Smell is rich and malty with a touch of smoke; or is that phenol? Taste is heavily malty, with some melted brown sugar and a bit of grainy texture. Some sugary/saccharine overtones that seem out of place. But this goes down pretty quickly, with no overtones of alcohol, so I don’t have too much room to complain. Clean lager finish except for some malt stickiness.
