Pouring across your tongue you taste oats, chocolate malts, a touch of alcohol dryness, and a nice dark fruit bit of sweetness. Get one! Sombeast (151), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 20, 2007 It looks like a new batch has been brewed and is on tap, so I’ll be pleased to rate it. Alcohol was claimed by the bartender to be at 11.5%, and after a pint, I’m inclined to believe him. This beer is rich and dark, with a respectable head. Aroma and flavor are both rich with roasted barley. Alcohol is somwhat apparent in the aroma and flavor, but is not objectionable. Mouthfeel is substantive, with an almost oily character. Hopefuly I’ll be back for more before this one runs out. 8-4-8-4-4 StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 30, 2006 Semi-opaque and black with light mahogany edges when put to light. Creamy, dark tan head that’s basically just a layer of dust. Decent aroma consisting of dry dark chocolate, coffee grinds, blackened oats, caramel, vanilla beans, tiramisu and chocolate torts. Progressing to flavor, there’s a coalescing sweetness that builds momentum post-sip, each and every time. Some lactic semi-sweet chocolate traits and arid cocoa powder. Mild bakers chocolate and semi-souring nodes, but a percussive, dry sweetness prevails. Seems like there was a hefty sugar additive throw into the mix. Chalky, dark chocolate afterlife with hints of black patent and booze in the finish. All in all, an enjoyable rendition. JPDIPSO (4923), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2006 Dark brown with a small, tiny bubbled lid of tan suds. Sweet roasted malt and treacle aromas. Only a hint of dry herbal hops. Thick, chewy and smooth in feel. Mild raspberry and light roasted malt flavors. At times it is a touch too sweet. A decent effort from this brewery. Actually better than I expected. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 30, 2005 Sampled on my b-day... possibly the best beer water street makes... and it still pretty much sucks. a kind of transulcent black color w/ a tan head and some lacing. Smells of light roasted malts and hints of brown sugar and plum. very light for an IS. Palate is thin and overly carbonated. Flavor is genericly sweet some plum, and raisen and carmel and blah. BLAH. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 24, 2005 Fairly dark, but not completely black body. Semi-lasting creamy light brown head. Very fizzy, annoyingly so. A little thick and coating in the mouth. Semi-roasty, but mostly sweet with brown sugar and overly sweet port-like fruit. Some charred whisky wood and resiny green grass notes. Too sweet and forced complexity to me. Its not bad but a pint got tiring. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Dec 20, 2005 Clear dark brown body, thin tan head. Very light aroma - light oily patent malt. Good roasty sweet stout flavor, not much hop bitterness. Milk chocolate, coffee, dark chewey with a light oil bitter leaf vodka upturn in the end. The flavor is decent but what kills it is the unsmooth, dry mouthfeel. Clashes with the rest of the beer.
