Brouwers Hard Liver fest 2009. This was funky, soft of sweaty foot nose, something off and almost salty about it. Caramel and some fruity notes, but I just couldn’t get past the odd flavor.

From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 13/10/2007 Very strong whisky aroma. Golden bronze coloured very strong in alcohol and fruity with a bitter lasting whisky finish.

2006 on draft at Hard Liver Barleywine Fest 09. Savory, soy sauce nose with touch of chocolate. Flavor was more hoppy and bitter with a metallic finish. I’m not a fan of hoppy barleywines, but even if I was, I think this could have been done better.

2006 on tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver ’09. Pours orange amber with a thick off-white head. Rich buttery toffee and caramel nose, the taste is surprisingly hoppy but still a little buttery. Thick mouthfeel with a nice hop finish.

On tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver 09. Pours an orangeish-copper with a small head. Crazy dichotomy with this one - it smells like it’s very malt-heavy, and could use quite a bit more hops... but it tastes exactly the opposite. Weird, weird experience - somehow the hops get buried in the aroma, but flourish in the flavor. Very full-bodied, and a nice brew, but without any outstanding qualities.

Draft at the brewpub. Murky dark brown with loose bubbles on top. Otherwise headless, and laceless. Looks kinda syrupy just in the glass. Sugary sweet/perfumey nose, tons of sticky malt sugar knocking around--caramel and brown bread. Thick, sticky, flat body. Creamy caramel, brown bread, and floral hops that swirl through to a bit of hop oily fruit and then a reinous bitter finish. Nice stuff. The sweetness is out of balance, and with all these hops it might have been designed for the long term--right now, it’s a bit green, but pleasant nonetheless.

Aroma is very floral and perfumey with big hops and a very light sweet malt profile. Pours dark red/brown with a nice head. Nice fruity sweetness is with lost of hops in the finish. Pepper, floral, piney hops. Water Street sure likes their hops.

had at hardliver festival in fremont. this poured with a big head and was quite hoppy for a barleywine. Might have needed more aging?
