The aroma has sweetness and notes of malt and metal. The flavour has sweetness, notes of slightly sour malt, berries and fruit, and it ends on a slightly dry and sour note. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 4, 2008 Tap at “La Brouette” on the Grand Place in Brussels (23 on the beer list; almost all good). Came in a properly labeled thistle glass. Sweet malty aroma (with a hint of sour?). Brown near black color with a good beige tan head. Starts fruity. Moves on to sweet roasted malt. A porter with fruit - no. A "new" Gunnness with fruit - no. Barring an occasional metal note it’s almost light and refreshing. Not at all sticky. That’s it - perhaps a McEwans with all that sticky sweetness removed. It’s quite dry in its way - but the bitter is rather mild. It really is refreshing. Very glad I had it. In memorium de Watneys or something like that. Breweries go away, but labels and recipes move to Stella Artois, or some huge conglomerate or other. caesar (3034), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands

Bitter taste, malty. Not really special, but nicely balanced actually. Boutip (2396), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 24, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear brown color ale with a good size foamy head with some average retention and no lacing. Aroma consists of nice caramel and toffee malt. Taste is also dominated by some caramel and toffee malt with no peat characteristics that I usually enjoyed in this style and some very weak hops. Not bad overall but just a bit too simplistic. beerbuzzmontreal (2922), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 15, 2008 Pours a clear reddish brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma of carame with earthy and peated malt. Flavor of caramel with earthy and peated malt with a sweet finish. The body is light with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. It’s interesting but the malt lacks some richness. JorisPPattyn (5192), Antwerpen, Belgium

Quite fruity nose at first, but fading, leaving traces of dark, roasted malts and vegetable frying oil. Quite sweet taste, with caramel, some faint bitterish-roasted notes. Some molasses seem to float around, the alcohol shows, conveying even more sweetnes. Still fruity, but of doubtful stamina: caramelized strawberries, overripe banana, Japanese plum preserve. Thick, oily to quasi fatty MF, really slick, but I cannot call it rich. In the aftertaste, I get vegetable frying oil again, even more recognisable. Too sweet, too smooth. I just don’t trust it: it oozes, instead of pleasing.
