Tap @ Wedge Brewing Co. Black pour. White head. Flavor has a lot of roast. Very sweet roast. Light molasses, eucalyptus, and far spruce. Overly caramelized sugar. It’s just an odd complexity of flavor. Chocolate malts. Huge. Aroma of chicory, herbal hops, chocolate malts, chocolate, hops, a touch of house blend coffee. Simple nose, complex overall. AWESOME! My favorite of Wedge. <27 Oct 09>

The aroma was roasty and toasty with a strong presence of dark chocolate and espresso. The aroma was decidedly dry and slightly estery with some caramel malt way in the background. The beer arrived black with a tan frothy head which laced the glass from top to bottom. The flavor contained a nice dark chocolate with a moderate impression of sweetness, but at no time was the flavor anything other than dry. Roasty with an estery espresso coffee character lasting long after the dry finish into the aftertaste with dark chocolate trailing behind. The body was medium with a moderate level of carbonation and a creamy texture on the palate. A nice porter, quite dry, but still a solid brew. Pint at Wedge.

Draught at the brewery. Pours blackish brown with smallish beige head. The aroma is rich chocolate, some dark fruit, and bits of vanilla and toffee. The flavor is bitter chocolate, a little bit of roast and nuts, and some woodiness. The finish is lightly ashy. This is pretty tasty.

On tap at the brewery, listed as 6.8% abv. Pours near black with a small head. The first thing I notice about this is its very American approach. The aroma has light grapefruit with much stronger notes of charred wood and bitter chocolate. The flavor is slightly sweeter with suggestions of molasses, but smoky qualities, bitter hops, and baking chocolate keep this bittersweet at most. A few sips into the pint I start picking up a vanilla flavor I usually associate with British porters. I found this to be quite good.

Draft at the brewery on 11/1/08. Deep brtown with ruby highlights, and a light tan, fleeting head. Coffee, chocolate, roasted nuts and hints of hops. Medium body and carbonation, smooth, dry. Flavor of burnt sugar initially, followed by a spicy, piney bitterness that was not overwhelming and provided solid balance. This is an excellent porter from a promising new brewer. I’ve had some samples a sips of several of their other beers, but not enough to rate them. Nonetheless, everything I’ve tried seemed well crafted and drinkable, and I’m looking forward to more from them.

On tap at the Brewery. Black, nice tan head. Chocolate and coffee, of course, but also a fruity, garpey aroma. Pretty much the same with the flavor, as well. I like the grape note - It makes it unique and tasty. Pretty good stuff.

Mode: Draft
Source: Brewpub

Appearance: opaque dark brown, fine tan head, streaks of drippy lace,
Aroma: dark chocolate and roasted aroma with a hint of dark caramel sweetness,
Flavor: rich chocolate malt flavor, touch of toasted, milky caramel sweetness brings out the chocolate richness, touch of smokey earthy character, light balancing sweetness, maybe a hint of dyactyl in the background, if so it goes well with the chocolate like a butterfinger,

Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 15/20
Rating: 3.6/5.0
Drinkability: 8/10
