Deep purplish-ruby pour with small sandy head. Roasty and malty aroma. A little like raisin bread. Sweet and tangy tastes. Nice amount of roasty malts along with some drying bitter hops in the finish. Full-bodied, rich and smooth. Hints of chocolate at the start and some touches of fruit at the end. Solid stuff. skisangelo (60), Collingswood, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 21, 2005 Pours a nice mahogany color with a nice off white head. The aroma is roasted malt with hints of coffee. The taste shadows the aroma, a bit watered down on the malt finish, a slight hint of a bitter after taste. This is a slightly above average brew. swirl (267), collingswood, New Jersey, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 18, 2005 This beer poured a nice brown with amber highlights topped by a thin head. There seems to be a nuttiness with a slight chocolate scent in the aroma. The flavor is smooth and rich with some more chocolate flavor. It has a very nice mouth feel and a good finish. Not quite a porter but a lighter version of it. Definately a good beer to drink. hawkshadow (102), Rural Retreat, Virginia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 15, 2005 Aroma is very weak. Just a little malty scent.
Pours a dark brown, small fizzy head completely diminishing.
Starts somewhat bitter, little sour, very weak.
Finishes somewhat bitter, slightly sweet.
Allright but nothing exciting. I would drink again, but never hunt for it. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 2, 2005 12 oz bottle. See BBB63’s comments also: this seems much closer to a schwarzbier to me as well, and I had a totally different label from the picture. That said: dark purplish-black, thick moderately lasting off-white head...dry coffee, bit of underlying caramel, subdued vanilla and tarragon in the vivacious nose...smooth, creamy mouthfeel, nice balance of dry and wet (mostly dry). I liked it quite a bit. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 28, 2005 This beer makes me yawn....there’s my first and most prominent observation. This beer pours a deep ruby red color, clear, with a thin pearlish head which dissipated quickly and no lacing. The aroma light with malt and plums/cherries. Perhaps a hint of roasted cocoa in there as well and a hint of espresso. The flavor is watery, light bodied and uninteresting with little redeeming qualities. Finding flavor is this lightly carbonated mono-tasting beer was tough! Some plums and cherry, a hint of espresso, oakyness and malt. This was honestly boring me into sleep. No good qualities, no bad qualities, just sort of a liquid going on its merry way. 00cobraR (1098), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
