| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 7, 2006 I’ve had this beer both from a bottle and from the tap (at the brewery in Manteo). There’s nothing like a beer right at the brewery, but the bottled version is good as well. It is nearly black but surprisingly smooth. A lot of flavor, but very little after taste. A great beer. 19641948 (491), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 16, 2006 From notes 12/21/02:
Poured a deep dark chocolate brown, nearly black. A beige head started somewhat creamy, then whittled away to just a trace upon the top of the beer. Coloring of the head then was that of a melted root beer float. The lacing was fair. Deep roasted chocolate aromas and flavors. Little hop bitterness present to balance. Slight coffee or even caramel also present. I detected a somewhat "burnt" aftertaste which somewhat distracted me from an otherwise better score. hophead75 (1964), Boonton, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 8, 2006 bottle. Pours a reddish brown with a small tan head that dissipates pretty quickly. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, lightly roasty. Taste is the same with a lighty tart finish. very drinkable. bubbleflubber (898), Collinsville, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 22, 2006 This reminds me a bit more of a porter than a dunkel. Nevertheless, it pours a ruby-cola into the glass, with a nice tan head, no retention nor lace. The aromas of coffee and smoked roasts are predominant. These aromas transfer directly into the flavor, alongside some cherry notes (which differentiate the porter from the dunkel). The slight cherry bitters bring a finish of coffee. The mouthfeel is thin and of skim milk/cream. This is a nice offering from the Weeping Radish. Arnie (272), Chicagoland, IL, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 21, 2006 Growler. Dark and rich brown. Hints of coffee, some bitterness. Good flavor. gws57 (1144), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 20, 2006 Had this one from a growler from Manteo, North Carolina. Very dark brown pour, with a filmy tan head, some malt in the nose and baked bread, with a nice milky mouthfeel, and notes of coffee and chocolate and some smoke. Pretty good. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 11, 2006 This sample was, despite the same name - but with a slightly higher ABV (5.7 instead of 5.2) - not brewed in NC but at the Anker Brauerei in Nagold, Germany, under license).
Yellow-brown, creamy head; dark, nearly black beer with hints of red. Chocolate, vinous, higher alcohols, bit of laurel, dark malts. Slightly sourish, indeed a bit stout-like, sweet malts underneath. Much less aromatic than the nose, the laurel is there, more woody finish. Well bodied, bit of sourburn. Black LAGER??? Fusels, vinous notes, what is this? Whatever, ’t ain’t half bad. eaglefan538 (2399), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 5, 2006 Poured dark brown-black color with a nice initial head that turned to near nothing. There was some lacing. The aroma was malty and caramel-like. The flavor was of caramel, chocolate, and coffee with a slightly smokey finish. Mouthfeel was moderate to heavy. Enjoyable.
