ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Nov 27, 2007 Draught weizen at Deep Ellum on 11/3/07 Prominent, foamy, beige head tops a cloudy magenta-maroon body. Strong retention and lacing speak to both the quality of brewing and the cleanliness of Deep Ellum’s draught lines. Soft and fruity, with warm cherry, date and raisin notes mixing with caramel malts to give an easygoing aroma. Banana and clove do not bludgeon, but add a tell-tale signature to the finish, leaving spicy hops to add zestiness and dry some of the sweetness. Bubble gum is fairly strong here, and the lack of roast in this dunkelweizen helps push it to the forefront, for better or worse. It comes off a little sugary/bubble gummy, then, but still impresses with the cleanliness and mild, comforting notes. No alcohol or flaws, medium to medium-high strength of aroma. Very soft and chewy palate immediately evokes wheat, caramel sugars and fluffy, yet tight carbonation. Dates figs cast a more poignant note in the background, while up front sweet, caramel pecan flavors mix with vanilla-dusted bananas and medium dry toffee. The bubble gum is not noticed as singularly in the flavor, but certainly does add to the overall sweetness when taken with the caramel and toffee-like malt notes. I won’t say the 23oz glass went down with extreme ease, but it certainly wasn’t a challenge to drink it either. Soft, wheat and yeast-blunted flavors provide the mild nature to the beer and improve drinkability, which could be further improved with less sweetness. Certainly not unbalanced, though. Flawless, with no alcohol or fusels noticed.

I was expecting a heavy thick beer, but I am pleasantly surpirsed at how light it is. A very tastey brew. Hefe’s are my 2nd favorite style and this on is top drawer.
