nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Mar 30, 2009 Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Sweet, malty aroma with caramel and roast. Flavor is malty and sweet with dark fruit notes (plum, fig), caramel, alcohol, and slight hop bitterness. Smooth, fairly full palate with a little alcohol warmth. Overall a phenomenal example of the style. Spaghetti pairing was not great though. joshwilfong (769), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Mar 23, 2009 dark brown with medium tan head. moderate carbonation. nose of caramel malt. flavor is of caramel malt with some burnt notes from kettle caramelization. hop bitterness makes it reasonably balanced. not too much residual dextrins doesn’t leave it overly malty and cloying. the finish might be the best part, being very clean for such a large beer. very good, one of the best doppels i have had arondee (176), Tucson, Arizona, USA Mar 20, 2009 Beer #100! Poured a very dark chocolate black with a hint of red. Smells roasty and bitter. The taste is all dark chocolate, smoke, slightly sweet slightly bitter. Very well rounded, not too much of anything stands out to me. A good beer. johndoughty (2150), cheslyn hay, West Midlands, England Mar 20, 2009 Bottle. Brown and poured with a small head.
