How: Bottle, consumed fresh a few days after purchase
The look: Very dark ruby body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Crisp molasses (and lots of it), raisins, toffee, some black liquorice, some tobacco. Somewhat sticky. Starts off ok but syrupy sweet and by the end of the bottle I was sick of it. Might please those with a sweet teeth. But I must admit not being a big fan of Doppelbocks, I’ve never been to a Doppelbock game cheering “Go Doppelbocks Go!”. Palidor19 (1764), Brandon, Florida, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 1, 2008 nice and rich, with lots of caramel and a mild amount of hops, it oozes substance with lots of room left over in the after taste. a great beer to add to your collection. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 28, 2008 Maybe it was a poor decision to try the Ayinger Celebrator and then try this. 94% really? Aroma of malt and hops with chocolate eclipsed by the smell of something missing. Taste is full and typical of a good German Doppelbock but I couldn’t help but notice the thinness of the flavor. Overall, not terribly overwhelmed. Great mocha chocolate color with deep amber head. kimcgolf (828), Dacula, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 21, 2008 Poured to a dark brown with medium thick off-white head that lingers til mid-glass and leaves okay lacing. Nose is a pleasant malty mix of earth scents, roasted nuts and smoky wood. Mouthfeel is full and slightly chewy, and the flavor is malty sweet nuts, chocolate, caramel and a hint of the 7.4% alcohol as the beer warms. Rounds out to a nice long finish.
A pleasant experience. robinvboyer (1428), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 21, 2008 Such a nice aroma of malt, deep caramel, and biscuit. FLavour is full bodied, and rich. Loads of caramel malt, and bready malt. Wicked doppelbock, one of the best in the genre. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 21, 2008 Honey roasted malt aromas. Dark brown with a thick head. Very tasty flavors of malt, brown sugar, honey, Palate is solid and just rich enough to stay balanced. Well rounded and drinkable. Will definitely need to revisit this one. freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Sep 20, 2008 Updated: Sep 30, 2008A juggernaught of beers. Embodies the spirit of the dopplebock, pouring a dark brown wand topped with a thick fluffy tan head. Strong malty aroma and flavor. Nice malt presence sits on the back and sides of the tongue for a long semi-sweet finish. A bit of raisiny dark fruit, and a subdued bitterness shows up in the finish. Every bit a contender for Ayinger’s dopplebock. Hurray Reinheitsgebot! joeyplush (333), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 19, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a dark tan head. Resembles a stout. Taste and aroma have hints of chocolate malt, roasted nuts and coffee. Palate is oily, and has a slightly smoky finish with a nice lingering taste of roasted malt. The alcohol content is not as evident as I expected in the aroma/taste, but the beer has a nice, chest-warming effect as a result.
