AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Oct 13, 2009 Deep ruby red color with a viscous tan head, beautiful pour. Nice roasty nutty, yeasty earthy sweet dark bread aromas. Medium body with light carbonation. Big malty, flavors are lightly sweet with toasted toffee, rich toasted multi grain bread (Miltons) with seeds and nuts. Mild warmth in the finish. Great Doublebock, jonno (542), Brisbane, Australia Oct 11, 2009 Poured a dark amber brown with a big foam head. Lots of fruit on the nose, very sweet and fruity on the tongue, If a bit muted. Quite a bit of carbonation. A solid doppel, but there are better examples of the style out there. Love the artwork though. Classic! nate2g (1034), Brisbane, Australia Oct 10, 2009 Bottle. Pours ruby with a large tanned head. Sweet malts and toffee dominate the nose. The flavour is sweet malt, caramel, toffee and dark fruit. There’s stickiness in the mouthfeel and also a light warmth from the alcohol with more sweet maltiness coming through in the finish. A classic doppelbock. JanEric (167), Meppel, Netherlands Oct 10, 2009 Bottle, 50cl. Nice print on the bottle. Dark red brown coloured, small quick vanishing head. Aroma is roasted malts, caramel, coffee, it’s strong in the nose. Tastes bitter, malty, full bodied, good balance, although you taste athe alcohol slightly dominating. Nice. Wulfstan (509), California, USA Oct 5, 2009 This doppelbock is excellent, with plenty of character, yet great balance and drinkability.
Dark red-brown, it has a creamy tan head that shrinks very slowly to a thin foamy top and leaves a little lace.
The aroma is toasted whole wheat bread, scorched raisiny syrup, and hints of wood, hay, and grain.
The taste has firm, complex character but is smooth and very pleasant. It has prunes, wood, raisins, whole wheat toast, and some spice. The sweetness is firm but balanced with toasty, peppery-spicey bitterness that takes over at the finish.
potbeercollege (254), Boulder, Colorado, USA Sep 27, 2009 Bomber, in snifter. Orange-red-brown clear color, very dark. Strong aroma with a subtle blend of sweet booze and molasses. Thin, beige head that sticks to the lips. Great after-dinner brew. Wombata (74), Kobe, Japan Sep 26, 2009 Appearance: Dark brown
Aroma: Molasses, caramel, coffee
Flavor: Caramel,
Palate: Rich, full-mouth feel without excessive heaviness.
Comment: I didn’t detect a lot of complexity, though that may have been as I had this near the end of the evening. Still, it is delicious. KyotoLefty (1371), Kyoto, Japan Sep 21, 2009 Draught at Q-Brick in Osaka.
Lovely reddish brown color. Chewy, meal-like aroma of oatmeal, cereals, chocolate and biscuits. Amaxingly complex malt, with chocolate, caramel, raisins and lots of dried fruit. Creamy, smooth, chewy mouth with superbly soft malts. Fantastic.
