Guinness4Duff (507), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Jun 28, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown pour, nearly black, with a thick frothy tan head. Mild toasty aroma with some hop spice. Flavor is roasty, mildly nutty and has a nice chocolate taste. Really outstanding. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 25, 2008 Bottle. Dark mahogany-red pour with a fluffy tan head. Up front malty nose - caramel, dates, yeast, and toasty with some vanilla. Flavor is similar, caramel malt dominates. Smooth bitterness in the finish, but thin and metallic. Nice but didn’t blow me away. blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 22, 2008 bottle, dark ice tea color, very malty fruity nose, has flavors of cjhocolate, cocoa and black licorice, very smooth to finish afireinside96 (807), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 19, 2008 Pours a very dark brown color that will still allow some light through with a tan head. Smells of dough, caramel, and dark fruit. Rich malty presence tastes of brown sugar, caramel, and dough. Quite yummy even on a hot day. Capa (952), Yokosuka, Japan Jun 11, 2008 Dar brown in color with a nice head. Caramel malt dominates both he aroma and flavor. Roasted malts, dough, and a little nutty. Smooth body. A bit too sweet but still a very good beer. tomjr9 (11), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 8, 2008 Pours very dark brownish read with a tan head. Smells malty and rich. Rich flavor with lots of malt and a bit bitter. Not as sweet as many of this style of beer that I have had. Feels very silky in the mouth. yemenmocha (344), Glendale, Arizona, USA Jun 6, 2008 Pours deep mahogany, almost red, with light tan head.
Nose is tough to discern in my wide mouthed German stein but is bready, roasty, and rich.
On the palate is a smooth medley of roasty malts, brown bread, some brown sugar and/or caramel too. All of this glides around elegantly with a smooth, medium body. Very sexy beer.
Finish is lightly sweet with some alcohol. Warming.
MrBunn (1520), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 1, 2008 Bottle Pours a dark brown that lets a fair bit of light through around the edges. There is enough head that I would guess that I’ve only got 8 ounces or so in my pint glass. Aromas are of roasted malt, nuts and damp earth. Flavor, mouthfeel and palate are all very lovely except for a slight bit of cloying sweetness that I detect from time to time... not every sip, but it’s there enough to get a little annoying. Still, very nice drink.
