millstadtguy (50), Millstadt, Illinois, USA Jan 6, 2007 Poured a dark brown with a nice head. Very malty taste along with alcohol. Not bad. I just don’t think this is one of my favorite styles. sayravai (3720), Helsinki, Finland Dec 25, 2006 Updated: May 2, 2009(Bottled) Quite clear, dark red cola brown color with a smallish, tanned head. Very malty and caramely, very slightly sour and moderately fruity aroma with smoky hints. Very full-malty, slightly sour and roasty, surprisingly neutral (not cloyingly sweet despite the huge amount of malt) flavor with licorice hints, and a mildly bitter finish. Obviously no signs of alcohol here. Quite full-bodied, velvety and smooth-carbonated palate. A solid, enjoyable and warming, sweet and caramely-malty doppelbock from a great brewery. Not quite as balanced as the Weltenburger Asam-Bock, though, and the sweetness may be too much for some. gilvanblight (390), Windsor, Ontario, Canada Dec 17, 2006 Very strong fruity scent, no actually berry scent. A bit of tomatoy hops. Very dark red pour. Pure ruby red. Nice had. A ton of flavour. Claims to be from the worlds oldest brewerly 1040. Alcoholy raisiny/pruney caramels. Smoky, some dark bitter chocolat and herbs. kwoeltje (1313), Manchester, Missouri, USA Dec 12, 2006 (bottle) dark brown, slightly hazy. Generous tan head. some lace. Aroma is MALT. Flavor is sweetish malt, hints of dark fruit and cocoa. kseecs16 (865), Naperville, Illinois, USA Dec 11, 2006 Bottle poured a dark brown with ruby showing against the light. A thick light brown head that exhibited lot of lacing crowned this brew. A nice full malty aroma with a touch of nuttiness. Body is strong malt with a roast character, a little less sweet than I expected, but pleasant. Nice full creamy mouthfeel. cmanley (3), River Rouge, Michigan, USA does not count Dec 11, 2006 A pleasant aroma of sweet caramel. Tastes initially sweet with a mouthful of bitter hops at the end. Overall a plesant drink. jb (1023), Rochester, New York, USA Dec 10, 2006 This one tasted especially good as I used it to help celebrate a drubbing of the hapless Cowboys tonight in the NFL. This is a strong rich good bock. Dark orangish brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of alcohol, fruitcake, malt and caramel. Rich palate that is all at once sugary, chocolaty, roasted but then it peters out just a bit at the end. Loved it but probably not the best of the style. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 2, 2006 Appears a transparent crimson with a cherrywood hue. Medium amounts of CO2 bubbles slowly rise to the top of the creamy, ivory head that has fades into a filmy cap. Scattered streaks of lace are left around the glass.
Smell is of toffee, vanilla, roasted nuts, cocoa, and sugary caramel. Super nice with light booziness.
Taste is of the same, rich, well blended aromas. This is a nice treat via Germany.
Mouthfeel is super smooth, creamy, sugary, medium bodied, along with a velvet balance that glides along the palate.
Drinkability...what a treat. I had Matt Capone (BA capones) special order this b/c I’ve never seen it in the SE PA market for some reason. No wonder it’s such a rare treat...it gets gobbled up whenever it comes around.
