mutant (854), Melbourne, Australia Jun 18, 2006 Red-brown with short-lived beige head. Very strong sweet chocolate-malt aroma. Flavour is hard to define, it has sweet fruit without a hop presence. Overall it is just cloyingly sweet with a bit of alcohol in the finish. ratman197 (3139), Arvada, Colorado, USA Jun 15, 2006 500ml bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a diminishing brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, raisins, a hint of smoke and a bit of molasses. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark fruit, roasty malt, some molasses and a hint of smoke with a lingering bittersweet finish. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 11, 2006 Lot 5484. Poured a burgundy brown color with a generous head that lasted quite nicely and provided good lacing. This one had a vinous and dark fruit type chocolate aroma. The flavor was similar with figs, caramel, and raisins featured over top of some chocolate and licorice that came out in the later flavors. A little bit of the maibock doughiness in there. The finish contained some hops, slightly grassy after aftertaste. Mouthfeel was moderate for a bock, but a little light to average for a doppelbock. An enjoyable 800th review. vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Jun 8, 2006 Pours dark brown with a reddish tint - rich tan pillowy frothy head. Aroma has rich chocolate and cocoa malt (as in a malt shake) - very rich aroma. Medium think mouthfeel with just a little soft carbonation. Taste starts off rich and has roasted chocolate malt - hints of toffee and cream are mixed in there. The finish has spiciness and hoppiness - odd finish for a dopplebock. Overall a truly great beer. demitriustown (689), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA Jun 6, 2006 Pours a clear brownish red with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is wonderful malty, caramel, a slight smoked aroma, light chocolate notes, hops, and dark fruit. Taste is a distinct mouth filling maltiness, caramel, chocolate, still a little bit of smoke, lovely combination of flavors. Palate is lightly bitter and a light malt texture. This is the first time I saw this in the store and I’d have to say I’m pleasantly surprise. A very nice doppelbock, definitely recommended. antzman (313), Clarksville, Indiana, USA Jun 4, 2006 Bottle. Pours a dark deep brown with a thick tan head. Sweet nose with caramel and toffee. The flavor is intense. One of the sweeted dopplebocks I have tried, it is nonetheless very well put together. Sweet malts with a clean smoky finish. An excellent dopplebock! whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 3, 2006 Dark brown-mahogany body with a big, foamy beige head. Interesting warm caramel, roasted marshmallow, and dark bread crust aromas. Chocolate, caramel, and mild dark fruit flavors with medium high malty sweetness. Initial fizziness subsides and leaves a smooth, creamy texture. A good, tasty doppelbock from a proven brewery. jasonp (1504), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA May 30, 2006 Pours dark clear mahogany with a medium, creamy beige head. Smoke, peat, candy-like sweetness and a hint of grass in the nose. Very bold and malty with notes of caramel, dark cherry, plum, raisin, sweet toffee, peat, brown sugar, molasses and a hint of chocolate. Pleasantly sweet with just enough hops for balance. Medium bodied with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. Decent head retention. Overall, great beer.
