kuphish (150), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 19, 2009 Bottle. Pours a large, frothy, pitted/craggy, light brown head. Dark brown body is a clear ruby when held up to light. Smells of dark malts - caramel, prune and raisin. Also present in the flavor, along with a touch of bitter cacao/dark chocolate and miscellaneous fruit - maybe some esters from fermentation. Alcohol presence is minimal, warming. Low hop presence; just enough to keep the malts in check. Medium-full body, light carbonation. Tasty beer. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Jun 14, 2009 Bottle, John’s Grocery, Iowa City. Deep brown pour, lots of light tan head that fades away fairly quickly. Inky raisin and milk chocolate aroma. Soft chocolate flavor with sort of an iron/chalk edge. A bit of lingering raisin. For all the sweetness, it still presents a little thin. Not bad, but leaves me a bit indifferent. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Jun 4, 2009 Bottle at Farina in Albuquerque. Aroma is toasted malt; flavor is light raisin peel, the same roast and light caramel. Not as rich as Blockhead, but certainly a great example of the style. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Jun 2, 2009 Pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head; decent retention and lacing. Aromia is sweet malts, is per the style. Flavor is equally sweet and malty, with caramel and clover honey. The sweetness is balanced just a bit by some coffee bitterness. Thick, full mouthfeel that is still very smooth. A very nice example of a dobbelbock. LtDan (470), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA May 26, 2009 Appearance: Pours an amber brown with a 1/2 inch of dense, sudsy head.
Aroma: Bready malt, and a little bit of brown sugar sweetness.
Taste: Caramel malt, bready malt, plum, and hop bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and thick.
Overall: A flavorful, well balanced Double Bock/Doppel Bock. daknole (2800), Plantation, Florida, USA May 13, 2009 Bottle from total wine. Pours a dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is malty and delicious. Lots of caramel, toffee, dried fruit and brown sugar. Flavor is sweet and totally malt driven. Raisins, toffee, light roast. Really a good beer. Dont know why it took me so damn long to drink and rate it! iride15 (169), Orlando, Florida, USA May 8, 2009 Poured a clear dark brown with a quick dissipating head. Swore the aroma was of bath water, but maybe I had a tainted glass (so I’ll trust the aroma notes of others). Malt, caramel, coffee flavor. Medium bodied, no carbonation. HonkeyBra (1258), Lemont, Illinois, USA May 1, 2009 Big, dark brown pour with tan filmy head. Caramelly aroma with notes of tobacco, toffee and roasted malts. Flavor is mostly roasted malt, toffee, caramel, some coffee notes, some fruit, a little weird finish. A hearty, nice mouthfeel. Good, but not great.
