Bottle. Pours with a light brown, bubbly head and a very dark mahogany body. Good lace. Aroma of bananas, rummy, alcohol, patent leather, chocolate, raisins, cinnamon, molasses, and caramelized mini wheats. Taste chocolate, light coffee roast, wheat, banana, vanilla, and sweetness. syrupy mouthfeel and light bubbles.

I was not sure what to expect based on the labelling, but turns out this is a pretty good Doppelbock. Dark chestnut color with a medium thick tan head. Thin, stringy lacing. The aroma is very malty and bready. Medium-bodied and smooth with a nice smoky malt flavor. Sweet caramel and light hops balance well together. The finish is mildly bitter and roasty. All in all an above average Doppelbock.

Aroma is a majestic roasted malt, with bitter, woody notes, clear garnet, pours a small tan head. Flavour is of big, bold almonds, brazil nuts, deep roasted malts and some lovely caramel. Full bodied, perfectly balanced, alcohol isn’t noticed. Fantastic, a titan of a beer!! Thank You mds!

In short: An overly sweet and slightly fruity big bock
How: Bottle, consumed fresh a few days after purchase
The look: Very dark ruby body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Crisp molasses (and lots of it), raisins, toffee, some black liquorice, some tobacco. Somewhat sticky. Starts off ok but syrupy sweet and by the end of the bottle I was sick of it. Might please those with a sweet teeth. But I must admit not being a big fan of Doppelbocks, I’ve never been to a Doppelbock game cheering “Go Doppelbocks Go!”.

500ml bottle, Bier des Monats at Weihenstephaner Berlin am Hackeschen Markt. Very nice deep, mahogany body with a fading tan head. Smell of dark berries and bready malts. A bit of everything in the taste profile. Half-way sweet, dark bready malts in fine interplay with dried fruits, raisin and prunes, and the smooth tartness of blackcurrant to the finish. Well bodied and balanced. Clean tasting. Strong and elegant. Definitely my best one during a short week in Berlin, and one of my best German beers ever (Berlin, 23.11.2009).

This doppelbock had hints of belgian-style dubbels and singels. Odd, really. However, I quite liked it for its uniqueness. OK.

Earthy malts, roasted and grainy bready flavor. Smooth on the palate with a sweeter finish. Almost a big meaty in the aftertaste. Mineral and metallic finish.
