| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Aug 25, 2002 Bocky, dark syrup aroma. Good label, bottle (ahem, homebrewers) and deep tea-brown beer with camel-colored head. The actual flavor and palate were a little disappointing given the nice aroma nad presentation. Dry, grainy and a little tinny. Dilute molasses-like flavor. Thinnish. Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark

Sweet malty and fruity aroma with notes of oranges, brown sugar and rye. Rye and malt in the flavor - very sweet for a Doppelbock. A quite mild and easy drinkable beer. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2008 Bottle: Pours a deep brownish ruby with a creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted, with rich malt character. Notes of mild cocoa, maple, raisins, as well as earthy suggestions (soil-like) to accompany the sweeter side. Creamy and silky mouthfeel. Mildly carbonated. Chewy malt flavors are there, yet it remains nice and soft. Sweet and roasted flavor balance nicely. Some mild maple notes, cocoa, dark German malt heartiness, followed by a mild roasted finish. Smooth and very traditionally true to style. tupalev (2617), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Very strong malty and brandy aroma; dark brown colour. Not much alcohol in the taste, just lots of malty doppelbock goodness. Full bodied and really enjoyable. Thanks to whoever brought this one. Why couldn’t you drop the Keith’s Light instead? downender (2609), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 9, 2008 Updated: May 25, 2008Bottle from Utobeer. Deep, ruddy brown with a decent, but short-lived, off-white head. Sweet fruit cake aroma of raisins, marzipan, nuts and toffee. Red fruit and caramel flavours overwhelmed by an unpleasant boiled sweet, pasteurised edge. Finish was short and dry, with the alcohol fairly prominent. Disappointing. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 24, 2004 Bottle: Apparently I’m the only one who thinks this, but the aroma seems to a combination of salt and grass. Smells almost like a soup but I can’t think of what kind (it’s on the tip of my tongue). Very strange. Pours a dark transparent reddish-brown with a tan head that dies rather quickly. Decent lacing. Very malty taste. Very, very slight bitter finish. Very smooth mouthfeel. Somewhat malty aftertaste. ChainGangGuy (2588), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 15, 2009 16.9 ounce bottle - $2.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a clear, very dark reddish-brown body with a foamy, bubbly, light beige head.
Smell: Deep, dark breadiness marked by some slight roast undertones. Minor hints of cocoa, dark fruits, and nuts. Smells a bit like that American single-slice pumpernickel bread you occasionally find wrapped in plastic.
Taste: Presents a pleasant taste of powdered, unsweetened chocolate and viciously crushed cola nuts sprinkled atop a thick piece of crusty, very dark bread. Modestly sweet. Lightly fruity taste of plums dunked in simple syrup. Mild bitterness midway with a touch of dried herbs. Finishes very smooth with the dark breadiness giving way to a bit more fruit and just a touch of alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation. Rather smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: A bit darker, lesser alcoholic and fruity than many doppelbocks out there -- I dug it! I mean, there’s only so much alcohol and fruit a man really needs, right?
