Roasted caramel and chocolate malt aroma accented with dark fruit. Very smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel. Complex, fruity taste with hints of molassas and black bread. One little harsh note at the very end of the finish. jrob21 (1281), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

It’s a handsome beer, from the gorgeous label to the pour. In the glass, it’s a fine teak colour with ruby highlights and a firm, lasting mat of foam. There are deliciously thick fumes of cherry liqueur, leather saddle, molasses and fresh-lacquered timber. The 7.4% alcohol is prominent in the aroma and there are spicy-medicinal Berocca notes. It’s thinner in the mouth than the aroma implies, but not disastrously so - medium-bodied, rather than full. The mouthfeel is creamy-soft and the finish restrained. There are strong raisin notes in a generally malty flavour palette, plus bananas, toffee and Dundee cake. The alcohol is prominent in the flavour but well integrated. This is one of my favourite styles and this gives the superb Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock a run for its money. (0.5L bottle, International Beer Shop, Perth)

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 14, 2005 16.9 oz bottle, goblet. Large beige head is rocky and mostly lasting. The beer itself is a deep cola/molasses color. Malt overload in the aroma...figs, caramel, chocolate, and that distinct, somewhat musty doppelbock zing. Simple aroma, but promising of a very sweet beer. Heavily sweet, lightly acidic flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly bitter/acidic finish. Flavor is just as simple to me as the aroma was. Still, simply can be tasty! Medium-heavy body, slick & creamy, lively carbonation. Nothing cloying here to me. The bottom line is: there’s a tinge of acidity hiding behind the carbonation and there’s more figs and less chocolate than I want...but, I love this style and this is a better than average offering. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 18, 2001 Beautiful amber color, nice head. Sweet malty aroma, no hop aroma detectable, but alcohol present in the nose. Very wheaty sweet taste that starts sweet and stays sweet. Decent, but slightly disappointing. Colour is a royal dark bourbon red with a medium small medium lasting tan head. Body is medium fullnes, lowish carbed, clean and non-coying. Flavour is primarily medium low sweetness caramel malt with touch of lingering fruitiness. Mild sweet and dry roasted malt reasonably clean aftertaste. Alcohol very well masked. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 8, 2009 500 ml bottle. Deep stained glass brown color. Big, foamy head. The aroma is all out lagery, sweet with a caramel funkiness. Smooth and creamy on the palate, this goes down oh so easy. Toffee and butterscotch tones. Pretty sessionable ABV keeps it light and drinkable. No real hop character. Excellent beer.
