The labels various brown colours makes you think dark and thick before you even open the bottle. Pours out a nice thick light brown cap (fades a bit quicker than I hoped) on top of a nice clear dark mahogany brew that looks ooooh soo good. Right off the bat there is a weird, pungent smell here that shouldn’t be - kinda like rank meat, something quite funky - fishy? I have no idea what this is. It is there sniff after sniff. It’s a pisser because the aromas beyond that are quite nice: heavily roasted malts - super dark, molasses, raisins, prunes, maybe toffee. Dammit - I cannot get beyond this bizarre, disturbing smell. The taste is excellent but oddly enough I’m finding something related to the aroma I don’t like... aarrg. Don’t matter much cause this tastes so fine: chocolate, roasted malts that are so damn thick, hidden sweetness - once i really noticed it it was obvious how it was fused throughout, almost something smokey that quickly vanishes, light spice that is not licorice, a perfect tasting bitterness, a concentrated dark orangy flavour in the back ground. Dammit - what isn’t in this beer? HA! I’ve just had a flashback to the soy sauce that I tasted sooo much in Sam Adams Tripel Bock - I think this is a prominent feature of the mystery smell and taste. Yes, I’m getting more convinced. Full bodied, so very smooth in my mouth - absolutely soothing, slightest of carbonation. Finishes strong and memorable with a fruity hop and heavy yet gentle malts. This is an excellent beer. My mouth feels kinda like an ashtray. Wow. Bumping up the marks.... this should be higher than I’ve given it but that characteristic of the aroma keeps it down. If anyone reads this and can explain that, please let me know. Nomad by Maiden blasting in the background. Good times. Get a hold of this brew and give it a go. Cheers. eboats (888), Omaha, Nebraska, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 11, 2006 Bottle poured a dark brown with ruby showing against the light. A thick light brown head that exhibited lot of lacing crowned this brew. A nice full malty aroma with a touch of nuttiness. Body is strong malt with a roast character, a little less sweet than I expected, but pleasant. Nice full creamy mouthfeel. P-tor44 (886), Anchorage, Alaska, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 26, 2009 This is one of those that left a weird impression on me the first time around, I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, but it is very nice this go around.
The beer pours a beautiful deep ruby color with a nice tight tan head leaving a good lace. Aroma is sweet, nutty, very malty. Flavor is far more intense than the aroma but follows suit. Immedate notes of molasses, some good roasted malt, and a lot of nice nuttiness working around in the background. There is a mild bitterness which seems to come more from the roastedness of the malt, but works with the bit of hops that is present. Palate is very slick sort of oily but plesant never the less. illidurit (881), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 1, 2008 Poured into my Eichhof bier mug. Pours a dark transparent brown with highlights ranging from ruby to orange. Nice fluffy white head of two fingers. Not much lacing.
Nose is very dark, with a kind of fruitcake-like sweet doughy maltiness. Some milk chocolate influence as well.
Tastes very sweet, with a lot of rich malt and sugary dark fruit notes like date and prune. The chocolate note comes out in the flavor, as well as a distinct flavor of fresh grainy bread.
Very smooth on the palate, with great carbonation and a nice medium-full body. A bit too sweet to be incredibly drinkable. Barrios (858), Nashville, Tennessee, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 13, 2008 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of dark bread, toasted and mild coffee, moderate hops of herbs and resin, light earth for the yeast, and notes of raisin, soy sauce, toffee, honey, and cola. Head is fizzy, light brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is brown. Flavor starts heavily sweet and lightly acidic, and finishes lightly sweet and bitter. Palate is medium to full, between creamy and syrupy and has a lively carbonation. Nice deep malty aromas and a sweet flavor makes this a great Doppelbock for me.
