Deep brown beer with good active head, towering even. The aroma is strongly alcohol-sugared. Indeed, the flavor is rich and thick with cooked sugar, nuts, roasted malt. Even some raisin here.

(Bottled) Quite clear, dark red cola brown color with a smallish, tanned head. Very malty and caramely, very slightly sour and moderately fruity aroma with smoky hints. Very full-malty, slightly sour and roasty, surprisingly neutral (not cloyingly sweet despite the huge amount of malt) flavor with licorice hints, and a mildly bitter finish. Obviously no signs of alcohol here. Quite full-bodied, velvety and smooth-carbonated palate. A solid, enjoyable and warming, sweet and caramely-malty doppelbock from a great brewery. Not quite as balanced as the Weltenburger Asam-Bock, though, and the sweetness may be too much for some.

50cl bottle. Trade with Bierkoning. Thanks. Pours unclear brown with a creamy white head. Aroma and taste is sweet of roasted malts, loads of caramel, rye-bread & dark dried fruits. Mouthfeel is smooth, filling, slick & soft. Slight syrupy & sugary but a very nice roast takes over. In the best doppelbock category! Super quaffable!

2004 bottle. Light burgundy red with dark stained-oak brown creates a lovely-looking body, or so I think. Initial head is full and of a light mocha-beige color. It recedes slowly to cover, leaving light in its wake. Aroma of prunes, raisins, chocolate godiva liqueur and that elegant, if somewhat too clean (for my senses) weihenstephan yeast. Very malty overall, this brewery is another one which does a great job with extraction and presentation of malts. Flavor begins with a sweet coffee and caramel mix, plenty of malt as expected and then you get some slight bocky wininess, a dose of drying alcohol and roast and a clean, lightly sweet finish, with light fruit notes of banana and plum from the yeast. Body is perhaps a shade too light for all of the sweetness and bold flavors, with a bit more prickly carbonation than I’d prefer, but they are only minor complaints of mine, and overall, I drank this beer quite easily and enjoyably. As it warms, there is a good warming sensation with some dry breadiness and more chocolate and raisins mixed with rum. Though it’s much more subtle than I make it sound, the alcohol does not jump out at you, but it is there. Perhaps a thicker body would take care of this alcohol apparency.
