Delectable appearance, pouring with a king-size head, the Dirk Diggler of head. The rest is pretty well what you’d expect from a quality German double bock. Bready. Check out a non-German but highly similar treatment, the Birra Moretti La Rossa (classified as Bock but not much difference). Some time back, I had rated that one a 3.8 and drew a comparison to this one....

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 6, 2003 Dry, musty aroma of caramel, dark chocolate, and a touch of nuttiness. Medium to dark brown colored with a small ring of foam. Good, well-rounded flavor of roasted nuts and chewy malt. Lot's of malt in this one, which makes me a fan. If it were a tad thicker, darker, and sweeter, then it would rival Celebrator. Aggie80 (713), Michigan, USA

There is a definite malt and yeastflavor with a smooth earthy finish. A hearty brew that stood up to the brussel sprouts I had with the meal. Uglyradio (776), Greenville, South Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 14, 2003 This one pours a very dark amber color with a medium sized, off-white head that lingers. It also has particles of yeast floating throughout the beer. The aroma is weak and I detect only a bit of malt presence. Medium bodied with low carbonation, the flavor is malty sweet with some hop presence in the finish and a nice lingering malty sweetness. This one gets better and better as I drink it. Good, strong maltiness, perfect carbonation, and a slight hop presence make this a good doppelbock. Dickinsonbeer (3587), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA

Pours a deep mahogany and leaves a nice lasting beige head. Aroma is slightly fruity but dominated by malts. Lots of munich, toasted, and chocolate malts in both the aroma and taste. Flavor is accompanied by a hint of hops in the end to give it a slight bitterness. Not cloying at all. Very easy to drink and not too syrupy like some doppelbocks. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Feb 6, 2004 Draft. Aroma is all malt - toffee, dark dried fruit, and hints of coffee. Dark red-brown in color, OK head. Flavor matches the aroma, on the sweet side. Full-bodied and smooth. Very good. Ungstrup (15460), Frederiksberg, Denmark

The flavor is sweet malty with notes of dry wood and roasted bread. A lovely beer. jefcon (1009), Arlington, Virginia, USA

Malty aromas complement the smell of baking bread, with some citrus in the deep background. Alcohol up front, with a lively, but creamy, palate. Lots of light chocolate malts, coffee and dark rye bread. Banana, too. Dry finish. One of the best dopplebocks I’ve had.
