Commercial Description:
The name tells the story: our dark beer is brewed according to a tradition handed down from generation to generation. An aromatic beer with a malty character. An archetypal Bavarian beer.

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, BBE Feb 07). Caramelly malts and a hint of coffee. A little thin and one dimensional in flavour but still pleasant.

Clear brown, with smooth head. Nice maltiness in the nose. Mouthfeel is good. Slighty roasted sweetness to taste.

Woody-amber, thick creamy top. Handsome lager. Aroma: fruity, malty nose, grainy with very light smoky character. Good dunkel.

When poured it displays a slightly off-white head over a deep red/brown beer. Excellent malt aromas displaying molasses, rye, spices (cardamom?) wood smoke and earthy/dirty tones. Initially sweet on the palate with more grainy, rye malt characters with the uncomplicated dusty/dry-grassy bitterness developing mid-palate. Some sourness and astringency follows to balance the sweetness and leave the palate revived. Quite a substantial mouth feel yet not overwhelming with fine carbonation for balance. Long lingering aftertastes of malt sweetness and alcohol give a warm pleasant finish.

Weak and underpowering with mild caramel flavours. Stick to the Hefeweissbier dunkel instead.

Bottled. Reddish-brown beer with an ok beige head. Nice carbonation. Sweet malty and roasted aroma with some beef stock. Flavor is light, sweet malty and roasted. Sweet, medium body. The beer feels too thin, but is pleasant anyway. (060224)

Pours a deep brown with a light brown head. Smells breddy and nutty. Taste is nutty with some mellow fruit and bananas. Where are all the great tastes associated with this style?
