Englander_1986 (51), Middlesbrough, England Nov 8, 2006 A really nice bitter, suprisingly, since its not all that popular. Decent amount for a decent price, deffinately worth a try. dkazuk (229), winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Nov 21, 2007 568ml bottle.
Pours a clear dark ruby amber. Has a full creamy tan head that sticks around a good while. Leaves a fair bit of nice curtainy lacing. Smells sweet and tart. A little bit of honey and grainy bread. Flavour is nicely bitter up front on a bed of roasty malts and some citrus and grapefruit in the finish. Slightly reminiscent of a good IPA. Nice palate, full body, medium smooth feel, soft carbonation.Very nice surprise considering the last Bitter I’ve tried. Good drink. bark (255), Linköping, Sweden Oct 2, 2004 The colour is deep deep amber with a tinge of brown. The thick beige foam dissolves surprisingly fast into a smooth cap (but that could be the result of using a too small glass).
The smell is generous: The scent of sweet raisins blends with fruity malt, burned notes and a firm, complex bitterness. Classy!
The carbonation is balanced with refreshing, small bubbles that soften quickly.
The taste. Ooooh, the taste… There is a distinct bitterness matched with a solid body right from the start. There are notes of dried fruits, nuts, diacetyl and a gentle touch of alcohol develops into a cream-like mouthfeel and a very complex bitterness with flavours of lemon, bitter almonds, raisins, cocoa and gunpowder. The aftertaste lasts for ages, and keeps on developing well after ten minutes.
What can I say? This is marvellous ale. But please be aware that there is a less alcoholic version of this beer, sold in cans, that is a good brew but not at all like this one. noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA Jul 25, 2006 Dark chestnut with brassy undertones. Fairly still, little head or carbonation. Aromas were chocolate, toffee, caramell, alcohol, yeast and herbs. Flavor was exceptionally balanced with initial notes of caramel, chocolate and vanilla giving way to herbal hops and then full-blown metallic hoppy bitterness, which sticks around awhile. No fruit sappiness here, just good old fashioned malt, yeast and hops. dwyerpg (2065), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Oct 26, 2007 A nice sweet caramel malt aroma. This is a pleasant beer. A little dryness, graininess and sweetness. Not overbearing in any way, just a tasty beer that hit the spot.
