zathrus13 (1288), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Apr 7, 2007 Dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma is malt, chocolate, and a bit of toffee. Flavor is malt, raisins, chocolate, and toffee. Very nice. TChrome (1298), Bedford, Texas, USA Apr 3, 2007 Bottled: Pours attractive mahogeny color with a totally retained light tan head. Aroma is nice combination of chocolate maltiness and lagered aroma. Flavor is nice: chocolate, roasted nuts, raisins, and toffee. Palate is overly thin especially relative to Celebrator. Nice beer. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Mar 30, 2007 16.9oz bottle marked 06.02.09, assuming this is best by February 6th, ’09. Pours a clear fairly dark reddish brown and a 1/2 finger beige head. Aroma of toffee, toasted grains, light buttery malts, sugary raisins, and something that may be hazelnuts. Fairly sweet. The flavor even adds a bit of roast and bitterness to help offset what seems to be an overly sweet style. Toasted grain and toffee seem to be the dominant flavors. No alcohol presence at all. Lightly dry finish. I would not call this full bodied--it’s actually kind of light for a doppel--medium is probably closer. Moderate creamy carbonation that prickles the tongue just a little bit. Pretty darn good overall. Mungo (2474), Southampton, Hampshire, England Mar 28, 2007 Bottle (from Bitter Virtue,, BB Jan 08). Lots of malty flavours toffee and liquorice with a little chocolate and a little toastyness as well. Sweet and a little sticky but not overly heavy in the mouth. Some alcohol is apparent. Despite the interesting flavours this was a bit sweet for me an lacking enough bitterness or fruity acidity to help balance it. Driftwood6 (214), USA Mar 26, 2007 Updated: Dec 29, 2007MIght be my favorite dopplebock for the moment. Can come off as a touch sweet, but the dopplebock style was originally meant as a replacement for food so I don’t mind a little sweetness. Tastes amazingly fresh out of the bottle-- that is what blew me away. They tasted so much like draft, that I effortlessly put down three bottles with dinner. To my palate, it definitely ranks in the elite class with the Celebrators of the dopplebock world. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Mar 21, 2007 Updated: Oct 30, 2007Bottled: Very deep brown in color with ruby tints, topped by a generous and well retained creamy tan head. Very malty aroma, with a hint of sweetness. Perfectly roasty notes, peat, brown sugar and chocolate. The mouth feel is perfectly creamy and has an amazing texture, a perfect palate. Amazing flavor of roasted malt, dark & subtle sweetness, chewy nuttiness, rich quality chocolate, hearty bready notes, and a perfectly balancing, roasted, smooth coffeeish dryness in the finish. This is a perfectly crafted beer which is perfectly balanced. If I were to rate strictly by style this would be a five! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Mar 20, 2007 Deep caramel color with shaveing cream head. Aromas are caramel and some dark fruits. Sweet and malty. Flavors are still malty, but not so fruity. Caramel and roasted malts. A burnt bitter on the finish. Not bad smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Mar 18, 2007 pours deep mahogany. aroma strong raisin/plum caramel, touches of chocolate, toffee, floral notes, and alcohol. taste is rich raisin caramel and toffee, it has a little cocoa and coffee roastiness. finishes with a sort of roasty nut dryness. this is a wonderful doppelbock, definitely one of the best ive had.
